Phewwwwww .......... phase 1 of our forum renovations is over. We are now working of the new server. please feel free to run over the forum and check all is well. If you have any issues ....... let us know.
The change we have now completed has the advantage of giving us somewhere around 15 times the capacity as far as space goes and you should also notice a difference as to how quick the forum's responsiveness is.
Now ........ phase two. We have been actively working on the development of our new look forum software. This has been ongoing in the background for many weeks. This will afford us the ability to provide a fresher, more modern look to the forum which our current software currently denies us. It should also offer more flexibility on the actual layout look and allow us to add other features which were previously beyond our reach.
There will be further updates on this as we make progress. our ultimate change over date for this would be before the end of the year. This is something that we need to review with the software developer.
Meanwhile, its back to business as usual for now.
thanks for the patience and understanding given to date.
Toto and the team.

No worries Paul. Thanks for the kind comments. It's nice to know our efforts are appreciated.

We think the up and coming face lift will help to give the feel of the forum a little lift. Nothing too drastic just a bit more modern and easier on the eye.

Glad you are enjoying the forum so far.

Cheers

Toto

Hi Ed,

That may continue for a day or so whilst the various servers around the globe realign themselves.

We'll keep checking over the next day or two and if it continues, we'll take a deeper look at it. Hopefully it will right itself without intervention.

Keep in touch and let us know if the situation changes for the better or not. These little snags are annoying but we'll get rid of them one by one.

Cheers

As I've mentioned a couple of times, the forum will require a little time to level out a bit. Apologies for the rather annoying break in the normally reliable service.

I'm a little reluctant to try and " fix " too much as this stage as some of these issues will disappear by themselves. It all part of the resettling of the various servers around the globe re syncing the change in DNS address etc. That's one of the reasons we initially stated 48 hours downtime rather than the one and a half that we managed the main migration in.

It's appreciated that we are being informed of these niggles and by all means ..... Please continue to do so. Don't be to worried if there is no " quick fix " to some of the issues as we would probably prefer to wait until around tomorrow ( Monday in the UK ) or possibly even Tuesday at the latest until we start to class these as technical issues. However, be assured that they will be dealt with......... Part of the price of progress. :avatar:

The next phase of upgrades which at the earliest is weeks away will throw up the same again. However any snags will be due to software incompatibility issues when we swap over. We have developers who will resolve these.

We shall be taking no unnecessary risks with the next stage and shall be trialling initial software changes on a dummy forum prior to changing over the live forum. This should see any major issues dealt with before you guys even get a chance to see it. There may be the odd issue that is missed and will only be caught as we come across it but we will have the back up of the developers for a certain period of time after the change over. After that, I can ( and will ) pay for additional services if required.

Apologies for the protracted explanation but it's our wish to keep everyone up to date and informed as to what to expect. We don't want to see a lot of frustrated members or guest users for that matter. All I can say is the changes are being undertaken in order to make the user experience better for all going forward. Not only does it help future proof the forum technically, but it will allow us to enhance existing features and bring in fresh ones.

If anyone has any comments or concerns, please feel free to express them and if preferred, you can always pm me personally.

Thanks again for playing your part in making platform1 what it has become.

Toto

Hi Toto

I am trying to change my Avatar and have deleted the existing one but when I try to upload the new one, the system tries for a while and then responds with an error message "please specify an image file on your computer that you wish to use as an avatar". Well I have certainly specified the image file and it is from the same folder as the old one.

Thought you would like to know in view of the recent changes.

Cheers

Richard

Hi Gormo

The file size is 3.45mg so it would seem to be a bit on the large side and yet my initial avatar was also of that proportion. I thought that the upload facility was automatically resizing the photos. I guess not.

Cheers

Richard

Hi Richard,

I think others have had an issue uploading images to the gallery as well. It would appear that the image file needs to be resized before you upload.

Not sure why this has changed. Please bear with us whilst we check it out. It could be a bit slow in resolving as I'm back at work today. I'll get onto it ASAP.

Thanks for letting us know.http://www.click

Image resizing on a server requires vast amounts of PHP memory. Especially if several users are uploading at the same time, or they upload large images straight off a DSLR camera.

Some hosting providers are more tolerant of allowing this extra memory than others. Or charge extra. Unless you have your own dedicated server.

Ken.

This is some free image re-sizing software that I have been using for years now.

It is reasonably simple and easy to use and allows you to re-size your images to whatever is required. I load all my images into this software and do the deed before I upload to the forum.

There is no add on baggage with the software and it performs perfectly every time.
