Thank you for your warm welcome.

After lurking here for a little while I thought it would be a good group to join although for a short while I thought I was unloved. Thanks to Paul and Sol for sorting the matter out.

I am impressed with the comradery and the wonderful work that the members are producing . Of the particular interest are Paul's tutorials on Arduino. I intended to do try my hand in the Arduino space so I will be following Paul’s tutes with, you interest.

My involvement in model railways didn’t come from the usual pathway by having a layout as a boy. Rather, I became interested in the hobby while stationed with the RAAF in Butterworth Malaysia in 1970. A fellow airman on a night shift loaned me his copy of Railway Modeller to read. I was hooked.

Being in the RAAF movements were quite frequent. Consequently, I opted to start in N Gauge as I thought it would be more portable. It was a poor start as N Gauge wasn’t near the quality it is today.

When I returned to Australia I was encouraged to take up 4mm. To be honest the RTR wasn’t much better than N Gauge and I still have nightmares about those white metal kits. I gave modelling away for a short while until I came across Swiss Narrow Gauge. This wasn’t so much as modelling but an obsession. However, after some years the obsession has dissipated and it was time to move back to some serious modelling.

Initially, the move was to US N Gauge but in recent years I have become more interested in 2mm Finescale and I commenced some planning which I will discuss in another thread.

Unfortunately, last year my wife had a cardiac arrest at 4am in the morning, coincidentally the same day I was to be admitted to hospital for surgery. I had to apply CPR for 20 minutes till the ambulance arrived. What a morning 4 paramedics, 2 police officers and assorted neighbours running in and out. It took several days to coax the cat out from under the couch.

If you or your family haven't done any CPR training I would encourage you to do so. Don't think it could happen to you or loved ones as my wife wasn't overweight, non smoker, only the very occasional alcoholic drink, and was very active. Be selfish, the life your partner or kids may save could be yours.

During my wife's hospitalisation of some 2 months and extended convalescence period at home as well having to return twice to have the defibrillator leads replaced (done under warranty) modelling as you could well appreciate was, as they say, on the back burner. We are very fortunate in that Lorraine hasn't suffered any major ill effects from her ordeal.

Our world is settling down now and we have decided to downsize and after some months we have finally found a home that meets our needs. Interestingly, it is adjacent to the Adelaide to Melbourne mainline. Fortunately, (or maybe unfortunately) unlike the East Coast mainline there are only a few movements each day.

    Kind regards

    Geoff

    More like dreaming :)

Lorraine and I have been discussing it so I am optimistic. Will start a new thread with my thoughts about the layout(s).

Things have settled down but I still think the cat has quite come to terms with it.

    Hi Geoff

I am sure you will really enjoy your association with PFM1 and all the people who are able to assist with your modelling pursuits. Although now a Sydney sider, I spent four years in Adelaide during my career development and enjoyed it immensely. And yes I have been on the steamey to Victor Harbour, the Quorn steam experience and also of more recent times the wonderful historical facility at Peterborough.

I am so pleased that you have come through a most traumatic experience.

Very best wishes for the future.

Richard and Lorraine (in my posts on Dargan, she is referred to as Lovely Wife)

    Thank you Richard.

Just had a look at your layout and was very impressed with the way you have captured the atmosphere of the Blue Mountains.

Although, my family lived on the Northern Sydney Beaches trips to the Blue Mountains were looked forward to. Indeed, as a teenager I spent many happy hours bush walking in the mountains. The highlight was taking the U Boat from Central to Katoomba or Mount Victoria. My father retired to Wentworth Falls.

Last September, I spent a few days in Sydney at a 2mmFS get together and it was certainly hot then. I am delicate little flower and I just about wilted.

I am sure that your Lorraine is just as Lovely as mine.

    Kind regards

    Geoff

Thanks Kim for the welcome. Pretty warm still in SA although the nights are starting to cool down.
