Yes Ian. Tis a Windy Miller scene.

"On a small plot, perched atop a windswept hill, sits an old Windmill. Long since its sails did turn, an enterprising individual has converted it into a desirable dwelling. Beside it sits the old barn, now repurposed as a trendy Holiday Let. "

The plan is formulating, some materials I am short of where ordered last night. I will trott down to Jewson thisavo for the 8x4 sheets!

TimberSurf That’s a great little video clip in the topic intro :avatar:
Reminds me of what often happens to Australian heritage listed buildings
Like a recently sold heritage Pub that was on a prime corner development site, it sold for a record price to a development company that has no others like commercial interests then on the day the builders moved in for the supposed renovations it mysteriously catches fire and burns to the ground.:faint:
The company spokesperson stands there and says to the waiting media we are so devistated the building is a total loss, but we will now look to redevelop the site with a exciting new and modern building (that will include a modern family friendly cafe and eatery) :scratchchin::scratchchin::scratchchin::scratchchin: no planning gone into that.

Looking forward to seeing what your repurposeing for the competition is esp after seeing the video,:thumbs::thumbs: now is that a 8ft x 4ft sheet, is it going to become a layout in it self :scratchchin:

"Camberwick Green is a British children's television series that ran from January to March 1966 on BBC1, featuring stop motion puppets. Camberwick Green is the first in the Trumptonshire trilogy, which also includes Trumpton and Chigley"

I was brought up with this, hence it is what I think of when you mention windmill's, I immediately think of 'Windy Miller' and the tune (dum dee dum) starts running in my head!
When the comp was announced, I immediately thought I could enter my "Garage diorama", an idea that was already in production, consisting of the use of my car lifts and a sales forecourt for some VW Samba's. The three buildings for it are all but complete and it just needs pulling together on a board with all the detail adding. But as none of it is repurposed, it does not fit the bill, so that will be another thread! Thus a brand new idea was required. Racking my brains for something original (as you will get to know me, I tend not to be a sheep, more independent and off track, so, more Goat like ;)), I needed an idea that both fits the comp and can be a diorama that can later be dropped in to my layout. As you will learn over time, each part of Lumsdonia tends to come with a story, the occupants of the territory infrequently follow the 'Mainstream'.
So, for the purpose of the comp, the Windmill will be sailless and and will not be prototypical as it will have way to many windows as it has been converted to accomodation.
In the fullness of time when placed on the layout, will have hopefully sprouted a sail that works for when it is planted on the layout. We will call it phase 2, post competition.
    The build
Essentially the main components will be Wills. Consisting off a reconfigured barn and 2mm textured sheets for the scratch built Windmill. I did look at all the available Windmill kits, but none of them fit my minds eye of what it should look like!
The scene will sit on a XPS (extruded polystyrene) base, hence I need to buy a 4x8 sheet of the stuff. I have done a simple CAD outline to give me the dimensions, so can start chopping bits of plastic now.

Please like, share and subscribe.......oh sorry wrong media :hammer: :avatar:

Whos' stupid idea was it to scratch build an octagonal sided building? :hammer:

The double glazing man has been round and started bashing holes in the Barn.

Windmill base is coming along, main door and lintel installed.

Now complete, mortar wash first, then dry brush after.

Cutting holes in 2mm is a pain! But I love the rigidity of just a simple construction that you get.

Cutting Wills sheets is a pain full stop! Can I just say what a great job you've done of the joints between sections - they look great!

The general cutting up is not an issue, I have a patented method that makes short work of cutting them up (just seconds per cut) my version is here, but can be bought from OLFA or Tamiya, etc. The joints can be made by scoring, then further scoring the sides to form a V channel and then simply fold. For the ends, don't try to file a bevel, just place medium wet n dry on a flat surface and rub the part against the surface. Holes are just dremelled out with a miller bit. The hard part (that takes ages) is to square up the sides and cut the round corners into sharp square ones. :headbanger:

Progress tonight, walkway on the windmill base, top constructed and Barn roof assembled and first coat of paint applied.
It looks more like the opening credits than the windmill! Just hum the tune while you look at the pics [IMG]
