Don’t be sad, Richard. 3090 escaped the scrappie, and wound up at Dorrigo. From memory that’s 5920 behind her, which is also now at Dorrigo.

Trouble with Dorrigo though is you cannot get to see them, for now anyway.

I finally got to complete the DCC install on 3065 and it certainly proved to be one of the more difficult projects. I used Gary Salt's approach and got to hone my soldering skills to as yet unseen new heights. Certainly packing all the components into the tender was a trial and error job but finally got there. Runs quite well although still a bit of fine tuning required to get the starting voltage correct. Also there is a tendency for the connection plug to come adrift so a bit of blue tack was necessary. All in all though a good little runner with plenty of pulling power and a nice sound.

    Cheers

I was booked off tonight, so my son, my nephew and I made our way down to the club to run some trains. I took the C30T along for a trial trip. Initial impression is very good. Mine runs smoothly and quietly, with reasonable hauling power. Now that I know it runs okay I’m going to number it and do some light weathering. This is the first NSWGR engine I’ve ever bought for myself, so I’m quite happy with it. And since I’ve worked on a few of the preserved examples I thought it was time to have a memento of that part of my life.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

It looks good on the track Mark and I am glad you are pleased with it. Now that mine has been running on DCC for a little while, I have discovered a few tweaks that have become necessary. All the tiny detail parts are simply pushed into place on the production line as is common with all Chinese products. Out with the supaglue and a toothpick and apply just the tip of the toothpick onto the joint areas. You will not see the glue but it does the trick. Another is the spring on the pilot bogie which is just a bit too light on and will start to cause derailments, noticeably over point frogs. I have encountered this before on other steamies but it is usually because the spring is too strong rather than too weak. Rather than hunt around for a slightly stronger spring. I just added a thin washer from my Kadee spares and it has done the trick.

    Hope this helps

    and happy modelling

I have seen this particular loco stripped down and new details added, like the correct smoke box, funnel, dome, headlight and a few more other bits and pieces. But for what the loco is and the price, it is pretty damn fine !

If you are on facebook, plenty of info and mods can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/NSWGR.SteamEraModelling/

    Cheers, Gary.

    Hi Richard.

Yes totally agree, Dorrigo has such a wealth of treasure and probably none will run again. A really great shame, for what they have and where they have the potential to run them.

I finally got my Wombat 30T out and gave it a run on the club layout and it performed very well with a branch line mail train made up of a MLV louvre van MCE and a EHO guards van.
I have done a non sound DCC install in my loco, I junked the wombat circuit board and hard wired lots of space in the tender once the pc board is gone.

A friend of mine has done a bit of a tutorial on fitting the wombat 30T with DCC Sound link below to the pages on the NMRA site

    Thanks Chris
A very good article and provides the solution to one outstanding issue I have in that my C30 also starts off a bit too quickly despite CV 2 being set to 1.

    Cheers
