    Hi guys,

I'm sorely tempted by a Dapol O gauge Terrier. I've read Toto's thread here. Anyone with any thoughts whether I should grab one or not?

I've no stock, track or experience of 7mm scale at all so can't decide if I'm being trigger happy!

PS ...... The class 08 is also hood and very easy to chip. ;)

Hi Matt everyone is different but if it were me I would buy the Terrier and then concentrate on your choice of track.
I’m sure another member will be along shortly to help with your decision.

Hi there Matt, the Dapol Terrier is a super little loco by all accounts and I've seen a couple running on our club layout, I personally don't own one because my area of O Gauge is mainly LMR steam and all region diesels, but like you I saw what I liked and went out and bought an 08 in green from Dapol and then a Jinty which as RTR are superb runners. So go for it and enjoy just looking at it if you don't start a plank or small layout... you never know you could end up buying two and then you could have one each side of the mantle piece. :avatar: One thing is for sure you won't want to sell the little Terrier if you take to it.

    Good lad Matt!
The pull is strong, as an entry into O gauge, it's a cracking loco, I saw them at a Dapol Demo stand and it's really impressive (especially for the money), but have a look at their OO Black Label, it will blow yer socks off. I so wish they would do more than just the slopey fronted ones!

I always fancied O gauge and have a long standing pipe dream for a small layout...think Arun Quay but less good!

However, in hindsight, how far in the future am I talking? I'm struggling to make progress with Talerddig (other than a big pile of stock!) so could I really see a 7mm layout in the next few years, with a 6 month old baby in the house too?

    I think not! :giggle:

    They are traps too... ;);)

I found with the layout I'm building, I took advantage of the 'Hattons sale of the century' bargains. I purchased two locomotives (Jinty & Pannier) which weren't as expensive as a few of the OO offerings. Parkside kits purchased through Peters Spares (which were cheaper than elsewhere by a few £) makes for a cheap, affordable layout. So far I'd say I haven't spent more than £630.00/$1140.00 Au (minus the VAT), and that includes all the track and postage costs. Compare that to a new Hornby 'Flying Scotsman train set' at £185.00 ($299.00 in Oz)...., there is bang for your buck in there !!

    Cheers, Gary.

You raise good points Gary - it was from Hattons SOTC I was going to make my purchase...but then common sense prevailed, and the sale has finished! I think I need to shift some of my surplus OO stock before contemplating 7mm scale anyway.

    Oh, welcome to 2019 everyone!

Aw go on, it's a lovely wee fella, even for a southener, and you'd be giving a wee pup a new home.

A lovely runner, and if using DCC will take OO gauge 21 pin decoders.

An ideal candidate for on inglenook layout, a three way point 4 yards of track, and 8 wagons simples

Embrace the dark side you know it makes sense :avatar:

Don't dither too long or we'll set SMR Chris on you

This is what I had in mind...mind you I'm not doing so well with the OO micro layout and fortunately (or unfortunately) the sale ended last night!

:hismiley:Don’t worry Mat they come on sale all the time so if in the future you decide it’s time to drop a O from OO and grow up a scale to O, I’m sure the bargains will still be around.
Hattons and Rails of Sheffield always have rolling sales and the Dapol O range features heavily with regular big savings.
Once you have your confidence with track and electrical sorted on the OO layout you will be set for the move to the big time and you will save on the eye sight issues that come with those tiny trains:avatar::avatar:.

Matt - careful SMR Chris is being very gentle on you, before you know it you'll be cradling the wee terrier in your arms like a long lost family member :avatar:

Actually, I quite like moving between the scales and gauges, I currently have a small selection of stock for HO, OO, P4 and O, so currently I will be aiming at building O gauge stock as I need trains for Another Bridge (approx 6 set trains required - luckily no shunting on this layout). My OO gauge layout Vitoria Road, needs ait of work done on the traverser to bring it up to the other traversers standards, and the rear track realigning so that both tracks align with the traverser at the same time, and the low relief buildings for the rear of the layout - still psyching myself up for that task. That leaves the HO - my son and daughter in law got me the Walthers Diamond Coal Corporation - so either a small inglenook or roundy roundy with a Coal facility in the middle may result, and finally the P4, not touched in over 20 years, but I have a selection of Highland Railway wagons built, and a BR Class 20 (Lima with Ultracscale wheels fitted), so a possible future project.
Back to the point - you can have both, let the creative juices loose, I'm sure you'll enjoy the journey

Paul is spot on having more than one scale to model is actually a plus, for me in I find keeps the interest high
If you find your getting over somthing and it’s a matter of having break from it the other scales are there.
I often just go out the back and have a shunt for 1/2 an hour on Moonan Flats whilst I’m in the middle of other projects esp DCC installs when the eye balls are hanging out after soldering up tiny 0404,LED’s
if you have seen Moonan Flats topic it’s a only got 2 points and a sector plate so very basic but provides lots of Shunting interest.

BTW rails have a very nice Terrier on special I’m even considering it as it’s a plain black version and the closest to the couple we had in Australia that ended their working life away from Government railways with what was called the public works or as contractors locos for building projects.

https://railsofsheffield.com/produc...5d-o-gauge-terrier-a1x-plain-black-dcc-fitted, or if BR is more your style they have a Jinty https://railsofsheffield.com/produc...ck-with-british-railways-lettering-unnumbered
Even BR western region is catered for a real bargain for a Pannier tank
    https://railsofsheffield.com/produc...e-class-8750-pannier-br-black-late-crest-3716
all are at very attractive prices for o scale models not much more than some OO models

Thank you for those links SMR Chris! The plain black Terrier is actually cheaper than the one Hattons were selling in their SOTC...food for thought!

Think the biggest problem for most people in the UK is space for a railway in any scale, let alone two layouts.

If houses here get any smaller, we'll all be running Z gauge :)
