This is a post of intent - while ordering up wheels for the Class 26 and J79 I thought I may as well order the wheels for my first O gauge scratch build - well my first computer aided scratch build

    Just a taster

The intention is to make the chassis with the wee cnc machine, and a combination of brass and 3d resin printed parts for the superstructure

This may be a while, as I have to learn how to use both the software and hardware to make it.

Jeepers - 7 months later and a wee bit of time off for good behavior, I finally made a start.

I scanned and resized the drawing from Peter Tatlow's Highland Locomotives book, then printed to A3.

Measured the boiler radii and started the 3D model in 123D

    upload_2019-8-12_21-58-30.png

Smoke box, boiler and boiler bands.

Then added - or is that subtracted the holes for the Chimney and Safety dome and the start of the smoke box front

    upload_2019-8-12_22-2-2.png

Now the wing plates sanbox and splashers

    upload_2019-8-12_22-4-55.png

The tanks start at the end of the splashers and are flush with the cab sides, which if printed as 1 piece is too big for the Anycubic printer. So a wee bit of thinking / juggling to be done.

I had done a little search about this engine as the name Drummond rang a bell, being the same name as the engineer who designed locos for the LSWR/SR, Dugald Drummond. But the designer of this loco, the W Class is the younger brother of Dugald, Peter Drummond !

Looking forward to following on with the build.

    Cheers, Gary.

ex Highland Railway engineers were popular down south, Stroudley, Drummond, it's how Richard (Ben Alder) managed to produce some amazing what if's by using some of the Drummond LSWR loco's as donors. Even the Terrier looked at home up North on Another Bridge - not sure how the southener would cope with a wee bit o snae :avatar:

Terriers were used north of Inverness during The Great War, along with an esoteric collection of other southerners, so managed! The Drummond brothers also left their mark on the NB, Caley and GSWR as well, with a lot of cross fertilisation between them. Proving the old adage that about all GW locos looking the same can be extended to this family's output has proved useful in my"adaptions" of their southern work.

    Well mixed but promising results

The downsides were all caused by the support removal

Before removal of the supports the prints were perfect, I will try reducing the weight and amount of supports, if this fails I may have to increase the thickness of the flange.

With the tank fillers I printed 1 paralell to the base (left) and 1 at 30 degrees to the base (right)

The left hand version displays layer lines (printed with 0.05mm layer height), whereas the angled version is spot on with no visable layers. Strangely tho' the safety dome showed no sign of layers, probably down to the 6.75mm dia of the dome to the 50mm dia of the tank filler lid.

2nd test print ready to go

    upload_2019-9-5_11-22-50.png

Trying light weight supports, and also turning the chimney and Dome upside down to see if that wiorks - 5 hours time will tell.

Ofcourse, I could just print the chimney and dome as part of the boiler print - I will need to see if they will fit on to the print bed.

While the test prints are going, I thought I'd try the smokebox and splashers, and just to add a challenge, rivets as well

    upload_2019-9-5_16-29-45.png

    the results so far

Didn't like the rivets on the front, and as I've done this with 123D that doesn't have a timeline, I've just redone it from scratch and can add the rivets later, now that I have worked how to do it. :whatever:
