Wired in the lights


Also done the other end but I’ve run out of wire. So can’t wire in the sliding yard in or finish this lighing feed off.

 

There has been one bit of the build that I didn’t want to reveal on here till today.

The reason being behind the name of Spencer’s yard is it is in memory of a friend we recently lost from our railway (Churnet Valley Railway in Staffs).
I’ve been a volunteer since 1996 and Roger Spencer has been a welder and worker on the diesels since before I began. He helped restore the 104 DmU we once had (prior to moving to the ELR) as well as Tamworth Castle and 33102”Sophie”. He worked on the S160 steam locos and no doubt many other fabrication jobs around the railway.

Roger is seen here a few years ago at Froghall when he had been driving the 33 on a service train. He was also a guard on the railway.

Roger, was born in 1944 and was 74. Today was his funeral.

I have therefore chosen to name my box file Spencer’s Yard in Roger Frank Spencer’s memory. The wagon works and welding specialist.

Philip and David cawthorne were two faces at the funeral today that I didn’t think I’d ever see again. Not that I got to speak to him, if he even remembered me? Kev Dowd of the DMU group, Ken Lupton... I’m surprised Richard Waterhouse wasn’t there, but may have been at work.. even Dibble was there!

A lovely memory. He gave me my first go at welding and helping (just) on the class 25.
I think I may be helping on it again soon in the near future when the restoration starts.

I’m trying to think of which Director to whom you refer... I can think of a few now where that cap may fit. I don’t think it’s as happier times in some ways, but hey, not here to wash the washing in public.

Yes Philip sat in front of me. It was at Bradwell then went up to a friends in the shadow of Mow Cop. (Harriseahead)

 

Ah,no, he was at LNWR I think by time I knew him.

Always know to me as “My mate” as that’s what he called anyone. I thought it was because he didn’t know my name. Till one day he actually called me Andy one day when I was guard and kicked in with the loco side to speed the job up.

Think he’s known as stumpy now as I think he lost some of his foot in an accident.

 

It’s nearing the end. Few detail bits to add and ballast the track.



Set up for the first time today with both fiddle yards (ok, sliding siding and a dead end.)



Here’s the sliding yard. Never built one of these this way round. Built one 25 years ago at school in wood... but never since. Quite pleased as worked first time.

Sadly, the light picked up by the camera is darker than that of the eye.

 

The wagon works kinda lacked something... I sat pondering for a while. Did some googling and sat down in front of Autodesks 123D Design program and sat and made me a new item.

I thought I needed a wagon lift.


So this is version 1. Simple A frame with an electric lifter and electric motor to move it side to side...



And later on today, painted..

However, talking to my railway colleague, he says I’ve based it on the wrong ones for the period I’m modelling here, and it would probably still have been chain/manually worked as this would have a max lift of only around a tonne.

So I’m doing a second version based on one found in a wagon works. Bit more substantial. Hopefully have some photos tomorrow.

I’ve had to print 5 legs for the newer version. The first two looked under sized, so beefed up. However, one print failed, so tried again with a mod.

Prints 4 and 5 will be used, but now to build the prototype.

The keen eyed may notice an N gauge wagon.... no, I’m not changing scales, it’s another work in progress of the wagon behind..

Work in progress.. first for me doing this kind of work, but it’s been fun. I’m just working on 2 last ideas. One of which is above. The other I’m not sure if I can complete by the end of the project, but some of this I think is the ideas, not so much “pulling it off.”.

I scaled down a larger model I had downloaded for the “Alien”... the police box is a slightly adjusted Hornby product.

EXTERMINATE!!! The Daleks have arrived in Spencer’s Yard.

Cleaned up and in white primer.


Initially painted in the wrong colours of brass instead of copper.. and then I spotted i had the eye and phaser the wrong way around.


The OO Dalek with an O gauge version. After the “black paint” pass. Awaiting the copper and gold.

All I need is a Dr...
