Also done the other end but I’ve run out of wire. So can’t wire in the sliding yard in or finish this lighing feed off.

There has been one bit of the build that I didn’t want to reveal on here till today.

The reason being behind the name of Spencer’s yard is it is in memory of a friend we recently lost from our railway (Churnet Valley Railway in Staffs).
I’ve been a volunteer since 1996 and Roger Spencer has been a welder and worker on the diesels since before I began. He helped restore the 104 DmU we once had (prior to moving to the ELR) as well as Tamworth Castle and 33102”Sophie”. He worked on the S160 steam locos and no doubt many other fabrication jobs around the railway.

Roger is seen here a few years ago at Froghall when he had been driving the 33 on a service train. He was also a guard on the railway.

Roger, was born in 1944 and was 74. Today was his funeral.

I have therefore chosen to name my box file Spencer’s Yard in Roger Frank Spencer’s memory. The wagon works and welding specialist. 0C9904DD-5DF9-4DBE-AA9A-C0F3D230B9FB.jpeg DC329F47-2B9A-475F-A59F-90B8CD5F766A.jpeg

I'll tell you a story about the Artful Roger as good old Philip would say. Years ago before your time there Andy the Dodger used to work for BoAlloys in Congleton where they refitted HGV refrigerator trailers for various haulage companies, much of this work required the making and fitting of new rear doors ... many of the old ones very often ended up in a big pile behind Roger's garden shed at his home in Church Lawton where he lived with his mother. Now in my time at that railway we were looking for some 8 x 4 marine ply sheets to build a small store shed to keep various lever frame and signalling items in, Roger came to the rescue and suggested I drive over to his place from Leek and take what I wanted which was a very kind gesture. So I did and at the time I had an old W reg Escort Mark 2 van fitted with a roof rack, arriving at Roger's place one Summer evening he must have put about a dozen of these damn aluminium coated doors on top of my van to the point where it was nearly sitting flat on its back springs. Ok so far but try driving the thing home... well how I got down Laddridge Bank in a straight line I don't know let alone burning out the brake linings, anyway I made it onto the A523 and turned left under the Cauldon Line bridge at Sheephouses and took the back lane to Chedd station via Basford Bridge, that's when the problem started, the old Escort didn't want to make it to the top of the hill with out a struggle and a lot of smelly acrid smoke coming from under the bonnet. Eventually having taken a few sheets off leaving them at the side of the lane I made it round Whirly Crook bends and free wheeled down the straight to the station, unloaded then went back for the remaining half dozen sheets, by this time it was pitch dark and fast approaching midnight. Goodness only know what Copper Carol would have said had he seen me when out on his night patrol down at the brickworks just along Churnet Valley Road.

Happy days they were then Andy and Roger was a thoroughly nice bloke, we often used to meet up at Oldfield's place with Cake Latham and Edward Ten Past Three and of course Matt Black, the Farmer and Killer all drinking tea made by the Duchess around the dismantled bogie frame of 80136. Maybe some of those people I mentioned you never knew since we all received the same fate by the arrogance and greed of a certain egotist director but none the less those days were great and are gone forever now. Makes you sit up and think a bit when good friends leave us... anyway that's my one abiding memory of Roger. :tophat:

Philip and David cawthorne were two faces at the funeral today that I didn’t think I’d ever see again. Not that I got to speak to him, if he even remembered me? Kev Dowd of the DMU group, Ken Lupton... I’m surprised Richard Waterhouse wasn’t there, but may have been at work.. even Dibble was there!

A lovely memory. He gave me my first go at welding and helping (just) on the class 25.
I think I may be helping on it again soon in the near future when the restoration starts.

I’m trying to think of which Director to whom you refer... I can think of a few now where that cap may fit. I don’t think it’s as happier times in some ways, but hey, not here to wash the washing in public.

Gosh was the service at Bradwell Crematorium ? No I haven't seen Dibs in about twenty odd years but I'm not surprised the Closet didn't go... don't think he got on with Roger very well. Was Cake and Philip there also?

Cake Latham named so because he worked at Mr Kiplings Trentham Bakery, Steve Latham aka Waterman's side kick at the former LNWR.

Ah,no, he was at LNWR I think by time I knew him.

Always know to me as “My mate” as that’s what he called anyone. I thought it was because he didn’t know my name. Till one day he actually called me Andy one day when I was guard and kicked in with the loco side to speed the job up.

Think he’s known as stumpy now as I think he lost some of his foot in an accident. :(

I knew his dad Bill Latham who was a driver at Stoke and what he didn't know about 24's and 25's wasn't worth knowing... a very knowledgeable chap and courteous gentleman too pretty much like most of the Stoke loco men were at that time. Bill offered to train volunteers at Chedd to drive Tamworth Castle but H treated him with contempt in favour of Essotank who was only ever a passed fireman cleaner on 9F's at Bescot, another chap was Frank Underhill an ex top link man who'd fired Duchesses and Jubilees on Euston Manchester expresses back in the day, he also offered to share his knowledge but was declined. Did you ever meet Cakes missus Julie? A very prim and proper gal who'd complain bitterly if she got engine grease on her nice new Gucci handbag.:avatar:

It’s nearing the end. Few detail bits to add and ballast the track.

Set up for the first time today with both fiddle yards (ok, sliding siding and a dead end.)

Here’s the sliding yard. Never built one of these this way round. Built one 25 years ago at school in wood... but never since. Quite pleased as worked first time.

As the moonlight reflects off the conveyor roof, the j94 shunts on in the late evening.

A little video update on Spencer’s Yard.

Sadly, the light picked up by the camera is darker than that of the eye.

The wagon works kinda lacked something... I sat pondering for a while. Did some googling and sat down in front of Autodesks 123D Design program and sat and made me a new item.

    I thought I needed a wagon lift.
    BD2B4298-8B15-4595-9484-427D271A4857.jpeg

So this is version 1. Simple A frame with an electric lifter and electric motor to move it side to side...

    9FB0BB81-D0CF-4C62-A8B3-382237486CAF.jpeg

And later on today, painted.. 6F5DAB6A-7DB8-4123-A805-B1BA5FEAC01C.jpeg

However, talking to my railway colleague, he says I’ve based it on the wrong ones for the period I’m modelling here, and it would probably still have been chain/manually worked as this would have a max lift of only around a tonne.

So I’m doing a second version based on one found in a wagon works. Bit more substantial. Hopefully have some photos tomorrow.

Taller, wider. I’m wondering if I need to beef it up a bit more though.

    Lifting motor in place.

    Block and hook next.

I’ve had to print 5 legs for the newer version. The first two looked under sized, so beefed up. However, one print failed, so tried again with a mod.

Prints 4 and 5 will be used, but now to build the prototype.

And the support beam to fit...

The keen eyed may notice an N gauge wagon.... no, I’m not changing scales, it’s another work in progress of the wagon behind..

    Thank you Gloria.

Work in progress.. first for me doing this kind of work, but it’s been fun. I’m just working on 2 last ideas. One of which is above. The other I’m not sure if I can complete by the end of the project, but some of this I think is the ideas, not so much “pulling it off.”.

I wanted to have a bit of fun with the box file... and the 3D printer...

I scaled down a larger model I had downloaded for the “Alien”... the police box is a slightly adjusted Hornby product.

EXTERMINATE!!! The Daleks have arrived in Spencer’s Yard.

Initially painted in the wrong colours of brass instead of copper.. and then I spotted i had the eye and phaser the wrong way around.

The OO Dalek with an O gauge version. After the “black paint” pass. Awaiting the copper and gold.

All I need is a Dr...
