What mould material (investment) are you going to use Tom?

When I start making moulds, it will be low temperature silicone moulds Ron. Initially though, i will be using NMRS to nake my moulds for me. I am down in Northampton in sbout four weeks time as a guest of NMRS models as Graham has very kindly offered to give me a demo on mould making and spin casting with the offer of letting me try it.

He uses a couple of different methods and machines but one positive is that one of his spin casting machines is the Tiranti C300 which is what I have just purchased.

My intention is that once I get up and running with Highlander Models and become more proficient in the use of the equipment and mould making, I will supplement the sale of the Highlander range with offering a mould / casting service to others. Ideally I'd like to have a modest product range of my own and the offer of services to others to a level where my QS days are over. ( 5 year plan ).

Wow - Yorkie did you pick up on that we've got five years at least of privilaged tasks heading our way, I can feel the honour being bestowed - bit like been hit with a frozen smokie

Got to see the beasies in the flesh today on a site visit, and they are impressive, now Toto has just got to industrialise his methods & processes to be able to produce consistant good results, which I'm sure he will do, otherwise the stick he will receive from us will be life changing :avatar:

Indeed and a plate of Smokies served with Candyfloss and Mulled wine too... Toto will have tourists flocking to his shed from all over the globe to partake in the after party delights of Highlander Models. :avatar::avatar: Don't worry Dundee I'm sure we can come up with a string of Platform 1 life changing jokes between us... oh for the privilege of a further five years of diesel kit test building. :tophat:

    Well,

My visit to NMRS is looming. Friday this week. A long drive down to Northampton picking up Yorkie on the way in York. Graham of NMRS has very generously offered to pick us up f4om our hotel on Saturday morning ( so we don't get lost ). And take us to his facilities for the mould and casting demo.

Looking forward to it. I should come home enlightened. :avatar: then the pressure is on to finish the shed conversion.

    Here we go.

    Good evening fellows,

Just back from an excellent day at NMRS Models hosted by Graham the owner. York Paul and myself spent the day seeing the first of the Highlander Model test moulds being made and cured in Grahams workshops.

Graham created the mould and then once cured handed the spin casting procedure over to yours truly. I was able to play around with other completed moulds that he had to hand and there were some fantastic results.

The big plus for me was to be able to gain a bit experience using his Terranti C300 spin caster as it is the same as mine. With the exception of getting the speed of the caster set correctly and the temperature of the white metal set correct ( 330 degrees c ) there really is not a lot to it. Make sure the moulds are free from debris, a dusting with talc ( release agent ) load the mould into the machine , close the lid and away you go. The machine spins the mould, you pour the molten metal in through the top hole and hey Presto.

    Some photographs will follow.

    Cheers

    Toto

And here are the photographs ... first off is the molten white metal being poured into the rubber disc mould, the temperature in the heating vat is set to around 330 degrees so the metal flows consistently to fill the mould.

Once spun in the centrifuge for a few minutes allowing the metal to solidify the disc mould can be cracked open.

And here is the result of the very first Highlander Models test castings, the bulk of which will be undertaken over the next two or three weeks. But none the less a milestone moment has now been turned.

    Who's rubber does he use?

Also did you remember to say: 'Izzy wizzy let's get busy' before you poured the metal in? :avatar:

Not really sure Steve but I noticed Graham's Mondeo had low profile tyres and went like a bat out of hell.
