With a lot of faffing around! The arch above the bricked up window at the right hand side are hand places strips individually added. The arches above the doors are cut from the SE Finecast arch sheet which are then fitted into similarly shaped holes cut into the plastic sheet.

Not sure which I prefer. The hand placed ones might look a bit cr@p when painted, the SE Finecast ones lack a bit of definition but they'll be in the shade of the canopy.

Thanks for the kind comment. Not sure my hamfisted efforts qualify as finescale though (certainly don't on other forums!)

Finally at the stage of being able to bring all four walls together.

    IMG_20190310_195540710.jpg

Unfortunately the front wall has developed a slight curve (probably as a result of all the door frames etc being glued behind) so it's being "encouraged" to straighten with a weight while the glue hardens.

    Lamination...

I did some tests on cardboard about 10 or more years ago when making card buildings, and found that when laminating parts, like doors, brickwork etc, you always need an odd number of layers, so that one doesn’t pull against the other. Later 1 and 3 counter layer 2s pull (how they know how to twist in a different direction I could never tell)

So it may be you need another layer behind? (Try a year piece and see what happens.

You're right Andy however my walls consist of three layers.

The problem is when I've glued said layers together. The cutouts for the door have been ever so slightly misaligned against the layers behind so the wall has developed a slight curve.

    :hammer:

Not the end of the world, the curve is only slight but it's enough to annoy me!

I'll see how it looks after a day under some weight!

Thought you might like to see some more progress pics.

The four walls are now assembled and braced internally:

I've added some detail to the end walls, front to follow:

Note the rather "glow in the dark" walls are a result of the internal layers and a strong overhead light!

Thank you Andy, it's very kind of you to say so.

Next job is to crack on with the roof later this week.

Bit of advice needed fellow modellers!

Been mocking up the roof parts this evening using the kit parts as a template. I've shortened the canopy, but do you think the roof pitch needs to be higher or does it look ok like this?

Apologies for the terrible phone photos!

You may be able to catch a glimpse of the canopy brackets mentioned in an earlier post. I'm pretty pleased with how these look.

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

Would the canopy be square and flat rather than sloping? (That said, I’m guessing it’s GWR? I’m not that up with western region architecture)

The rake of the main roof does look low, but it may be prototypical ?

Hi Andy, the building is based on that that stood at Chalford station, and I'm using the Prototype card kit as a basis for the model.

The roof/canopy are one piece and sloped. Having looked at some pictures online of the real thing, the roof pitch is shallow. It just didn't look right to me. Having considered overnight, I now actually think it looks fine!

To my eye it looks spot on Matt. But as you are asking, I reckon you're not so sure. At the end of the day, if you're not happy with the look go with your instinct, try a steeper pitch.

    Pete.

In regards to the canopy roof, can I suggest that you site the building at platform height and check it against a coach. Generally, the lower end of the pitch is in line (thereabouts) of the gutter line on a coach.

    Cheers, Gary.

Thanks Gary and Pete for your thoughts, they're much appreciated!

While I ponder further, I used the time tonight to knock up a store building for the end of the platform. I think the space at the left hand end will need something to help balance things out.

This is totally freelance, the size and shape being dictated by offcuts of plastic sheet I had left over. I may use it, I may not, but either way it'll serve as a useful test bed for painting and using the lazer cut roof tiles (a new product to me).

    Thanks

    Hi all,

In the spirit of trying to post completed models instead of random progress pictures, may I present the first officially completed building for the layout!

It's scratchbuilt from plastic sheet and I've utilised the leftover ends and doors from a Parkside van. This was originally going to be part of my challenge project that didn't happen.

I've painted it to hopefully represent a rusting, but in use store/mess room and the door is supposed to look like the paint is peeling to reveal the bauxite underneath.

Not the best photos given the light, I'll try to do some better ones tomorrow.

    Thanks for looking.

Excellent work Matt. The peeling paint is a good look, I like it. Did you use the hair spray method for the peeling paint or one of the many products available ?

    Cheers, Gary.

Thanks Gary. I used AK's Worn Effects for the peeling paint on the doors. I've had mixed results with this in the past but happily it worked well for the effect I was trying to achieve.
