Hi all, Some better photos showing the weathering on the roof. I'm really pleased with how it's turned out, especially as its made from random odds and ends. It's given me confidence to continue with the layout. Matt
Thank you Pete, kind of you to say. I'm especially pleased with this building given its humble beginnings. Started last year! I've said it before that I keep changing from project to project because its the only way I can keep motivated sometimes! Matt
You're not on your own mate, I easily get distracted. I have been working on a GCR coach project that I started quite a few years ago when I found the sides I originally made, I doubt it will get finished any time soon as I have about 12teen other projects going. Pete.
Lovely result you produced there Matt, its bang on the money for realism and authenticity skills well done there mate. You're not the only chap on here working on different projects all at once, I honestly think for many people it is an entirely natural way to work. Keep it coming I say. cheers Yorkie
It's very easy to get 'stalled' on a project for many reasons, whether it's waiting for parts, other projects taking precedence, getting to a tricky bit and awaiting further inspiration, or just plain fed up and ready for a change of project. It's far better to take a break rather than slog on with an "It'll do" attitude, when by leaving it a while and returning with fresh enthusiasm (or knowledge) you can move on and be happy with the results. I have a DJH "Rebuilt Merchant Navy" kit that has now reached the stage of being ready for final assembly, painting and decals all complete, but various other mainly outdoor and garden projects have reared their heads, so I have to take advantage of what decent weather there is to get these done........after all, I can work on finishing the kit when it's 'chucking it down with rain!' Keith.
Thanks all for the comments! It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one who works in this scattergun way! Matt
Another day, another random project. I've started building this, partly inspired by a photo and partly as a result of finding some Brassmasters etched window frames (that I'd abandoned - not sure why because they're lovely). I'm not building it with any particular purpose in mind, it may replace the platform store building, it may become something in its own right. The brickwork above the door and window arches is a bit of a compromise. When I built the station building, I cut "slots" in the walls for the arches but found the whole process laborious and time consuming. This time I cut the whole section away, inserted the arch, then backfilled the bricks separately. Far from perfect but will be largely hidden by the fascia boards and guttering. BTW, my buildings always look "glow in the dark" - I can assure you that they are in fact constructed quite solidly! Oh, and the inspiration I mentioned is on a very well known layout! Matt
This one is coming along nicely Matt and to consider it is made from stuff out your parts bin, great workmanship so do please keep posting up the pictures. It makes a refreshing change to see OO Gauge scratch building in progress.
Nice work on the building Matt. This building of yours reminds me of the crew quarters that stands at Cowra in South Western New South Wales. It is unused these days as the line has been severed. Cheers, Gary.
Thanks both! My building is actually inspired by the gate house (?) on Arun Quay, albeit reduced in size. Still, it is similar in shape to Gary's photo. Matt
Hi all, May I present Talerddig signal box...or a mock up at least . My original intention was to produce an accurate model of Talerddig box to place the layout, but I'm not sure it'd work, and all the windows...life's too short! Instead, I'm going to base my model on the original, but freelance it to some extent. Based on the mock up, I may lower the pitch of the roof and enlarge the lower window. I was tempted to do a platform box inspired by Caersws, and I'm still tempted. Maybe I'll make both and see which I prefer! Matt
Fast forward a few weeks and here's where I'm at with the signal box: My decision to use bigger windows has meant that the relationship between the box and hut is a bit off. I still think it captures the look of the original though so I'm pressing on. https://www.flickr.com/photos/47422047@N07/33211624095 Matt
You press on Matt it's looking great I don't think it really matters if the model is not a like for like clone of the real thing... its got loads of spirit already.
I'm with Paul, I reckon once the signal box steps and platform are in place, it will look like the original. Excellent modelling mate!! Cheer's, Pete.
Thanks for the support guys! Another day, another bit of signal box progress: Hopefully finish off the roof tonight while the baby sleeps... Matt
