Well yes Gary, I think you are correct. I hardly ever start out to make an absolutely spot on replica of a building or a bridge or whatever, but rather something that may resemble one of those things, yet being at the same time, a little different to those things, if that makes sense. Making it slightly different for me, allows me to throw away the rule book and the tape measure and the rivet counter and be guided by my gut feeling for the particular thing. I guess in modelling terms, you could class me as an Impressionist. Now I would never presume to put myself in the class of the likes of Monet and Renoir or any of their contemporaries, but rather adopt their approach on the way they view the world for their style of art. Up close, their work is a series of dots and colours and lines and as you move away from it ( the 3 foot rule ) those colours and dots and lines become water lillies and flowers and haystacks and fields etc. and for some strange reason, your brain accepts that. Up close, my work can look a bit rough and it may not be technically correct, but as you move away from the work and place it into context with it`s surrounds, hopefully it will look like it was meant to be there and offer a reasonable facsimile of the real thing for the viewer. Well Gary.......that`s better than some of the names I have been called in the past......... Now pressing on......The roof has been fitted......this was probably my biggest concern as the trusses are quite delicate, yet when glued to the inside surface of the roof they are quite a lot stronger. Also I needed to convince the light wiring to stay out of the way and not to interfere with the alignment of the roof. My original ridge capping proved to be slightly under size and did not meet the roof panels as desired. It was fitted anyway and then a correct sized paper strip was laminated over the top of that. As mentioned a few posts back, weathering will be applied to the roof. Following the roof fitting, it was then time to fit the kiosk. Then the posts were also fitted temporarily to make sure all was good. I will not permanently fix the posts until the canopy goes to site because minor adjustments will probably be required, maybe not, who knows until we get there.??.....but it`s just a bit of insurance at this stage. So then we are able to see what it looks like. I have to sit the canopy on a couple of pieces of timber to allow the wiring to trail down into the gap between them. Of course we`ve reached the point now where the valances can go on. Another gluing job requiring lots of little pegs to hold fast the bits and pieces. So here we sit for the moment waiting for PVA to go off. There are still barge boards to create, platform signs to go on, and a cover strip for the end gables and a little man or two to work in the kiosk. Not big jobs but fiddly and time consuming, however we are definitely on the home stretch. More as it happens Gormo
Time for checking clearances again and looking for errors. The close up photography has highlighted a couple of little issues I need to attend to, but generally I`m happy with the look of the thing. I`m also currently trying to figure out how to glue guttering to this building.......there has to be a way. I`m just trying to avoid making a mess of it. I`ll sleep on it I think and won`t rush in. First of all checking the atmosphere around the kiosk. I have given this business to my son and his sons. He doesn`t know yet that he`s in the Newsagent business... I`ve had this building set up on the platform again making sure trains clear it OK........so far so good.....no issues. It will look a bit better when glued down properly.....it`s sitting at a slight angle at the moment due to the wires sticking out the back of it. I need to do a patch over the corner of the valance.....that gap is annoying me Anyway........so far so good........just need to sort that guttering out.... Gormo
Looks great Gormo, sorry..., Gormae ! Can I recommend using a length or two of C channel from Evergreen Styrene (product no. 263 or 264) ?? https://evergreenscalemodels.com/collections/14-35cm-opaque-white-polystyrene-channel I would suggest painting it first, but only do the outside face, the underside (brown like the end strips) and the inside (dirty copper/black ?). Leave one side unpainted so it can be glued on using super glue. Being flexible, the styrene will allow you to apply a small drop of super glue (us a cocktail stick) on one end only and hold in position till set. Move along about 30-40mm and repeat, until complete. Once the guttering has cured, use a fine tip brush and run a thin bead of glue underneath where the guttering sits against the valance. Job done. Cheers, Gary.
That`s a damn good idea Gary... I have prepared two lengths of umbrella strut like I`ve done in the past. The problem is though to actually glue it on and being metal it won`t flex. So I think your suggestion about the C channel is the way to go. Looks like a trip to Woodpecker coming up tomorrow. Thanks mate... Gormo...oh uh err????...Gormae....
G`day Folks, I eventually got to Woodpecker and I eventually got my Evergreen strip.....No.263 Gary. My services have been required elsewhere for a couple of days, but I managed to complete the canopy today, except for some weathering which will have to wait until the glue dries where I`ve planted the darn thing on the platform. The " C " channel was definitely the way to go for the guttering.......thanks Gary.....and has completed a rather lengthy, fiddly job. The guttering was painted, as suggested by Gary, Brown on the outside and underside, and Copper on the inside. The Copper was then dry brushed over with some Matt Grey to achieve the effect you see below. The guttering being so flexible was easy to tack in place bit by bit with Superglue. It`s got that bashed around look, more by good luck than good management. I`ve also fitted some benches on the platform All the lights are now connected as well, so here we have some night shots Of course the most critical part to the whole process is to get the clearances right, so below you can see how close we are.......not much to play with but I like it that close. The other side And an atmospheric shot And a short night shot video Gormo
Ay??...What..?????........ Not necessary Gary.......it`s an internal feed from the back of the valance down into the guts of canopy somewhere via hidden pipes. I`d show you where it is but it`s too late now, it`s stuck down........................sorry mate.... Gormo
You wouldn't be far off with that description Gormo. In the past I have seen where the down pipes are part of the stanchion internally and externally. Just hope for you that birds don't nest in there as it would be a bu&&er to remove them ! Cheers, Gary.
Gormo, I do like your additions to the Kiosk wares... Are the magazines and newspapers all of your own creation or commercial. If the latter I wonder if you have a link to where I might purchase some, my Internet searches have been unsuccesful so far... Looking very nice too, even in the close-ups. Cheers, Martin
Holy Birds Nest Gary !!!!,..... I don`t want to over engineer this structure........I`m wondering what`s coming next.....barbed wire to keep the goats off the platform, a fence to keep the rabbits out, an electrified grid on the roof to keep the crows away, a little figure on the platform with a gun to scare off owls and squirrels......... Actually..??????......not a bad idea.!!!! Gormo
G`day Martin, I downloaded images of newspapers and magazines and resized them in LibreOffice Draw, printed them out, cut them out and stuck them on. In the end, the magazines were going to be tedious, so I found an image of some displayed on a shelf and cut strips of them out to lay on the counters. I have a PDF with the signs I used and will attach below for you. Gormo
Fab result Gormo. It has achieved that "Strathfield" look that I wanted for Hartley Grange. Will be tackling this as a project when I have completed my rather tricky Coal Elevator. Cheers and Happy modelling Richard
Meant to mention that I have already printed out five copies of the kiosk signs. Will also use them on a new Newsagent shop under construction.
Good on you Richard, If you want Aussie newspapers, just download images of same and re-size them, add them to a page and print them out. Gormo
Absolutely first class Gormo. I'll see the video tonight as I am about to head for work shortly. Looks right at home there. Cheers Toto
