Just looking for some help on masking - trying to mask the top half of a wagon (in white) so I can paint the bottom in black, but, despite having some good tape, (Modellers STUK Professional) I'm struggling to make it stick due to a lack of surface area.

Also, what's the best way to do it ? edge first and then the mask area?(paper ?) or mask area short of edge and overlap with another strip up to the boarder ?

My idea was put a line of Maskol along where you want the masking tape to go. Then fit the masking tape on top of the Maskol (when dry), then trim the Maskol to the tape line.
Not sure it will work but just a thought.

Nah, done the maskol, but still the tape won’t adhere with the small surface to stick to.

Oh well, guess it’s just a hand paint job which will take forever.

As Splitpin says ^ Tamiya masking tape has a high tack. Are you trying to mask off over printed plastic?

    It’s painted plastic. Gloss finish.

Could you apply some black (or white) decal strip then paint up to it?

Might solve the issue of surface area to apply tape to?

I’ve gone for the hand painted effect...

There is a lot to paint, but there is no way around it.

Lots of white to paint black! Work in progress which I will do in sections.

I've been modelling railways since the 1960s and I haven't managed yet to get a satisfactory edge by masking paintwork using any of the accepted methods. I gave up trying some time ago and these days I might spray the model with one colour, but I brush paint the rest and then give the finished model a spray with clear.
