Forgive me if I’m teaching you to suck eggs Gary. The 73/1 series and 33/1 series both were fitted with buckeye couplers as well as the running beam for connection to coaching stock. They also have an adjustable buffer depth like a Mk1 coach..

the high level air pipes were for the emu’s they worked with such as the VEP’s. everything could be done from high up rather than going down where the third rail was.

Thanks for the info on these two Classes of locomotives Andy. I had no idea that some British locomotives adopted the buckeye couplers ! You are forgiven !! :D

    Cheers, Gary.

Hopefully this photo of 33103 will show what we’re discussing. (I couldn’t find one of our own 33102 without the red screw link hanging over the top as ours have been refurbished earlier this year and obviously removed) the photo is courtesy of my friend Martin Pryzyna

    0B767E9A-75C3-4920-84C2-9E4E003789AC.png

although the ploughs are non standard, the 33/1 and 73/1 series locos had two air pipes at high level either side and one multiple working jumper (left hand side as your looking at the picture) and the other side the receptacle for the other loco or emu to plug in to. All this is a duplicate of that below the buffer beam with the exception of the vacuum hose pipe and the ETH plug (Electric train heating).

the buckeye is shown in the lowered position, which has a pin that sits in the loop of the normal hook (same on a coach unless they are buckeye only:fixed up) and above is the budding/rubbing plate, which on a real loco will rub the bottom of the corridor connection. (On a model it’s much further away)

    G`day Folks,
Just a quick update........more info later......but I`ve extended the back scene behind GCJ station........it`s only taken me three or four years ...or is it longer.....:scratchchin:

Anyway I`ve managed to move Warwick Castle into Essex......how`s that for an engineering feat.?????

    Looks good.
Don't worry about the geography. Leeds Castle is in Kent.:scratchchin:

    Yes Folks.....back again.,
Extended the back scene in the usual manner as done before.
For those of you reading this who are not familiar with the usual manner, I down load panorama pics of English countryside from the internet and use software to mix and blend them into a fairly substantial ( long ) panoramic back scene. They are then printed onto A4 sheets and cut out, lined up and glued to the wall in the shed.
The two links below firstly explain the assembly process and then, secondly, show the printing process.

Sometimes I overlay these scenes with other material, like buildings or trees or whatever is required.
This is what has happened this time. I have resurrected a back scene I have used before, however it has been overlaid with a picture of Warwick Castle and then further overlaid with a down loaded back scene provided by Wordsworth Model Railway.
    http://www.wordsworthmodelrailway.co.uk/index.html
I have had this Wordsworth back scene for some years now on file and finally found a use for it today.
To put all this into context, if we look at the pic below, the back scene to the left of Warwick Castle has been there for years now. The back scene to right of Warwick Castle
is the same as the left, only reversed.
A picture of Warwick Castle was glued over the top of the join between the new and the old back scenes and then the Wordsworth back scene was cut in half, approximately, horizontally, however the cutting of same followed a line through the trees to create new shorter trees that effectively create a new foreground and disguise the back scene underneath.

    DSC08307.JPG

So I have used the logic, that when you are out in the countryside, in any given area, most of that area would look roughly the same if you scanned around yourself approximately 270 degrees. Therefore, why not use the same back scenes for the general look of the landscape and then overlay different parts with buildings or trees or whatever..???........well it works for me.

    DSC08308.JPG

The farm house and stone wall is also part of the same Wordsworth background, however the trees as I mentioned above are only approximately half of their original height.

    DSC08315.JPG

The pic below shows a bit more of the length involved, however please excuse my poor old engine shed.

    DSC08309.JPG

Well that little effort has inspired me to get my finger out and start modelling again....:avatar::avatar::avatar::avatar:

Sorry Gormo - it is Warwick.
I was just meaning that the name of something isn't necessarily it's location.

I live in Warwick, about a mile away from the castle. It's really nice to see it included in a model railway.... Great stuff.

Just back from a cruise so while I have been holidaying you have obviously been flat out. Really good work and all the motivation for me to get on with by ow back scenes.

    Cheers

    and happy modelling

    G`day Folks,
Another push to move along further down the wall behind my station.
I have started overlaying buildings on the back scene already there.
It`s a mixture of down loaded images to give a blend from no specific area in particular. I just go with what pleases my eye.

    DSC08317.JPG

Of course it`s early days yet and we need paving and roads to set if off better, but this is the foundation work.

    DSC08318.JPG

    DSC08321.JPG

I am thinking now that I will add in extra layers before the next foreground layer goes on. I would like some taller slightly more distant buildings rising behind the foreground to give an impression of more depth.
So I will be trawling through my archive and also searching the net for suitable images.

    DSC08322.JPG

I will work from left to right from the end of the terraces to just slightly overlaying the trees on the right taking care not to block out Warwick Castle.

    DSC08323.JPG

    More as it happens.
    :cheers::tophat:Gormo

    Thanks Paul,
Ah yes.....if only it were that simple, to be able take inspiration and drive from a bottle of something..:scratchchin:
I know Toto enjoys his Brandy, but I am not a Brandy drinker. I prefer a good Scotch.....neat....sipped slowly and enjoyed whilst considering how many more to have.?
But alas, the Scotch is not the answer to Mojo-itus.....although it does help focus the mind on the nicer things in life, and it`s quite a sociable drink, and tends to bring out the somewhat slurred academic in us, even though the academic may not have been present in the first place.????....but there you are..???
I think in my case what happens is that, the ideas at least, have not stopped coming,.....Alzheimers has not yet taken hold....however the time and the drive to implement them is not always there in abundance.
So I progress in occasional bursts of fevered inspiration and implementation, interspersed with periods of creative drought.
The periods of creative drought find me going out to the shed thinking of doing something, anything in fact, to advance the railway build, yet once out there, the will to start is not present, so I just run some trains and enjoy what I have completed so far.
At the moment I`m powering ahead. I`m in one of those inspired periods and it`s difficult to hold me back. I will find the time, or make the time, to allow it to happen.
Yesterday I discovered a new image which I am adapting. It`s quite beautiful actually and will pretty much complete my rows of shops around to Warwick Castle. I should rename Warwick Castle to something like " Gormo`s Holiday Retreat "...:scratchchin: :avatar::avatar::avatar::avatar:
What I am searching for at the moment is a suitable town skyline to place in between the background and the foreground. I have the church spire from Saffron Walden ready to go into the scene but more is required........I`ll find the right one eventually. It`s difficult to explain what I`m looking for, but I`ll know it when I see it.
    :cheers::tophat:Gormo

    G`day Folks,
    More added this afternoon.
You may recall that yesterday`s effort left off with us having open countryside displayed between the end of the terraces on the left, and Gormo`s Holiday Home on the right ,as shown below.

    DSC08323.JPG

The said area has now been filled with some buildings and shops of a suitable vintage to hopefully compliment the railway

    DSC08324.JPG

The shops have had intermediate backgrounds placed behind them to suggest there is more going on behind them and also to suggest more depth in the scene.

    DSC08327.JPG

The corner element seems to have worked out better than expected. The buildings are just one continuous scene that bends at 90 degrees at the narrow little street between the buildings. The lengths and placement were all calculated to make this happen.

    DSC08328.JPG

The buildings behind the foreground shops are two separate images with their sky elements removed, so that the blue painted wall behind substitutes for the sky and suggests continuity for the whole scene.

    DSC08329.JPG

A view from the station platform. This will eventually change dramatically with the addition of model buildings which will add bulk to the scene.

    DSC08334.JPG

Now we pull back to survey the whole scene.
You may also notice that an Elizabethan building has suddenly appeared behind the platform canopy......wonder who put that there.?????......:scratchchin:

    DSC08331.JPG

    More as it happens
