And the front view with door placed in for looks, at least the boiler sits straight upright which was the concern I had.

So acting on the comment of Mr S the more I looked the more I wondered if I had set the boiler and firebox a tad to high on the frames, it needed lowering and with a flat file and some careful trimming I've managed to drop the boiler by nearly 1mm, then it was a trip to the workshop and those curves on the firebox got polished back too. Checking the result against the GA drawing confirmed the job is more akin to how it should be so maybe I have just looked to much at this loco and got blinded. Anyway I also discovered that the hand rail holes are in completely the wrong place, they need to align with the top of the smokebox door hinge, I'll mark and drill new holes 4mm lower but that will have to wait now until tomorrow.

If it’s any consolation, the Class 31 parts I’ve been drawing... rechecked a measurement on one bit. I was out by 4mm!!!:facepalm::faint:
We all make errors, it’s just best to find them.

Thanks there for pointing me to something I hadn't noticed  much appreciated because at this end of the year benchwork often ends up being completed under artificial light which is never as good for clarity as daylight. I started to put the boiler banding on and so far the mudhole door covers have been fitted on one side of the firebox... this has now taken that harsh curve line look off the top of the firebox.

Thanks Gary, I feel we are getting somewhere now and its a pleasure to start dressing the loco with the lost wax castings, personally speaking had i stuck with the original motion etches, the build as described in the instructions and some of the original white metal castings I fear then this loco would verge on being unbuildable or at least a very poor performer. Its just a case of adding bits on in the right order now all the basic stuff is done, a slow process but a pleasurable one now. :)

Thanks Pete, it been a hairy ride doing this one, its been the not knowing if something will work because I deviated from the original build instructions, not that they were much to go by but because I wanted to make this one in a way it was never intended. I don't think will shall take on anther aged kit again.

To be honest Dundee I deliberately set the bench mark high on this because I needed to know if it was possible to make a decent engine out of a pile of mush... the acid test will be when the motor goes in, there is still plenty of time for it to all end badly yet. :avatar:

This is the set up for holding down the boiler, footplate and cylinder block together with one 6BA screw... it all seems to work as intended so i'm happy, the lateral plate in the smokebox which has a nut soldered underneath also adds a strength to the base of the smokebox.

All that is left to add to the boiler now is the ejector casting and plumbing and two small pipes which run along the firebox boiler just above the left hand side tank the finally the smokebox door which i've already dressed, then to finish the saddle and side tank detailing before making up the lubricator plumbing

On the plus side with this thin brass, you have plenty of scope to add extra solder ;)

Added some extra lead which has done the trick, in fairness Dundee I think once painted it will be difficult to know this was a budget kit... I'll try not to drop it on the floor... as that will definitely terminate its career as a working model.:avatar:

Now that is very tempting Keith, sadly I don't think I could stop this business even if I wanted. Went to the bank to pay a cheque in this morning and a chap stopped me in the street (he'd hired me before some time back and lives in a huge farm house with guest apartment annex) ... oh no I thought here is another damn job coming up, and sure it was with the words "ah Paul I've another very big job for you when can you start".

Better to be busy and earning than sitting at home twiddling your thumbs Paul, that won't keep the wolf from the door! Anyway, you'll need to keep earning a crust if you keep buying all these kits.:avatar::avatar::avatar:

Dressed the boiler now and only have the exhaust ejector and pipework to build up tomorrow. Plenty of lost wax castings now being soldered on.
