    Hi all,

Just thought you may be interested in a comparison.

I received one of the new Hornby Stanier brake vans today by way of a swap. It just so happened that I purchased one of the original Airfix/Dapol/Hornby version from eBay last week.

The biggest improvements are the flush glazing, individual handrails (more on those in a moment), the inclusion of the underfloor weight box and the underframe moulding in general including the brake shoes being in line with the wheels on the new version.

    New van:

Now the handrails. Nice idea but poorly implemented. As you can see, there's quite a bit of unevenness which'll need some tweaking.

End on, tension lock aside and buffers aside, the original stands up well.

    A side by side comparison:

Even the Bauxite is a similar shade!

And finally the boxes - one is shinier!

I have to admit that I have a soft spot for these vans, so was pretty excited when I heard a new version was being released. In hindsight, I'm not sure it's markedly better than the original - but that's only my opinion!

    G`day Matt,
The curve in the bottom hand rail kills it for me.
The build generally has been improved with finer detail, so that slightly heavy look has been done away with.
If you changed even just the tension lock on the old version, it would bring it up to a very good standard and possibly be preferable to the new version....:scratchchin:

I agree Gormo, I'm actually planning on rebuilding and detailing the older version in the not too distant future.

I'm glad I got this by way of a swap!
