    Hi Folks

Well the fire hose task is completed and thanks again for your suggestions. I could not get any shoelaces anywhere near the scale size I was after so that was out. the heat shrink tubing proved to be too wide. The drying hoses are the flat type not the round type so when I flattened the tubing again it was too wide. So that left the A 4 paper but thinking on that I thought rather than layer the A 4 paper, why not get something thicker and so Eureka...manila folder sliced on my photo trimmer and it was also just the right shade of brown. Herewith the finished article:

    IMG_1452.jpg

The installation also proved to be quite authentic as the only way to get the hoses to drop properly was to soak them in warm water...so they have been authentically dried in situ.

While I was at it, It had been pointed out by an authority (retired as NSWGR train driver # 1) that my goods yards and sidings should not be controlled from the signal box but are the sole province of the shunters. Well I still want to control them from my control panels but for the sake of authenticity, I have now installed the correct lever frame sections to all points in the various yards:

    IMG_1459.jpg

I did not trim the Peco mechanism as that may be required in the future should the point motor fail and I need to install a surface mounted motor. Have had ro do this on other points already.

Gormos suggestion of doubling up the A 4 paper has also lead me to a solution for another issue. To be covered later.

    Cheers

    Well there you go Richard,
Thinking outside the box has led you to a really clever and simple solution.

    Hi Folks
Gormo's suggestion on folded A4 paper led to the solution for the fire hoses but thinking further, it has also pointed me to a solution for another issue and one that has been outstanding for quite a while....how to get the right size ropes to secure various loads for my S trucks. So if multiple paper works for flat fire hoses, why not multiple cotton threads added until the right appearance has been achieved? So having raided good wife's sewing box and much twisting later, the problem has been solved. So here are my various S truck loads.

    Wool bales

    IMG_1461.jpg

Wheat sacks, and remember when this was how things were done prior to bulk transport, all were hand loaded regardless of weather conditions.

    IMG_1463.jpg

    Timber

    IMG_1462.jpg

    Fuel drums

    Pretty happy with the result.

Now on to the next video

    Cheers

Now that`s a damn fine result there Richard....:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:
It just goes to show what a difference a load can make to a wagon...........it adds substantial interest and originality to your railway and the ropes look terrific.
Another tip for you Richard re the cotton / rope........it can be also coloured quite easily........it may take some experimentation to get what you want......but if you add some paint to a rag ( not too much paint )....doesn`t matter whether it`s acrylic or enamel paint....place the cotton over the painted area and wrap the rag around the cotton and hold it firmly between the fingers.......and then pull the cotton through the paint filled rag.
The cotton pics up colour randomly as it`s pulled through the rag......I used this method to create steel cable using silver paint.
    Keep up the good modelling.

Nice work on the ropes, must give that a try.
    Those trucks look fantastic.
My first thought though on seeing how the sacks were loaded was that modern rail safety people would go nuts if they saw how they were stacked up. They would deem it unsafe simply on looks alone. But, photos of the day prove that this was indeed the way it was done.
    How times change!
    Cheers

Yes Tony I can just see the Occupational Health and Safety people having a field day but as you point out, photos from the era confirm the approach. What must it have been like in 50 degree days out in the sun and as some photos show, wearing waist coats and jackets into the bargain?

    Cheers

    Hi Folks

I should probably refer to my next series of projects as either "from my period of confinement" or "ideas while in isolation". Either way we will all need to come to grips with the new order of things while concurrently sparing our thoughts and prayers for those affected by this terrible virus. So now to work!

With quite some time on my hands and still working to complete loads for my "S" trucks, one of those fiddly bits was to get on with some tarpaulin covers. I have used the cling wrap and tissue paper approach sealed with multiple coats of quick set PVA. Suitable painting and weathering completes the task. Although quite fiddly, the method does achieve a satisfactory result, complete with all the uneven creases found in most tarpaulin loads. So here is the finished result:

More is always better so here is the full consist:

Back to the man cave for more projects

    Thanks Dave

In these circumstances it is very nice to hear from you in the UK where things I guess are a bit worse than what we are facing in OZ and that is not in any way to diminish my sincere condolences to those many good people in our respective communities that are experiencing very difficult and often challenging times. Many very sorrowful. I have added on other threads that we will get through this with courage, thoughts, prayers and discipline as we have done with other challenges we have faced before. I am very conscious that our hobby, by its very nature, comprise a large number of senior citizens whom we are told by those in authority represent a large proportion of susceptible people.

Please respect your social distances so you can enjoy our hobby for a few more years.

My very good wishes to you all and please keep safe.

    Kind regards and happy modelling

Some fantastic wagon loads there. I particularly like the tarpaulins. I am being forced into taking a fortnight's annual leave as of next week so I may just get into the shed and start something myself.

    Keep up the good work.

For rope how about twisting three strands of thread smeared with PVA together, this should dry out to give a stiff stranded rope.

Nice work on the wagons, all very effective

Thanks guys and all the best over the coming difficult times. Yes Paul I will get on to the ropes and I have used the cotton method before. See my earlier posts on wool bales and wheat sacks. Even my better half wondered why I put up the post without the ropes but I was too quick off the mark.

    Cheers
