Hi I’m wanting to start building my first wagon kit. To start with can anyone suggest a really good plastic kit which I can get my teeth into. The kit needs to be in OO gauge and it can either be a plank or brake van. Any advice will be greatly welcomed.
You could try looking at peco as I am sure they do wagons in OO scale. I'll try and have a look. Maybe some of the OO guys will be better able to chime in here. I did do oo a few years ago now but did not buy any kits as such. There will definitely be some somewhere. Toto
Look up Antics online, they have various wagon kit types for around a tenner and some multi packs for less. A very good selection that will get you started. I'll post more as I find them. Cheers Toto
No worries. I think you will find a fairly comprehensive range on the internet. Plenty of choice by the looks of it. I have some slaters and parkside funds in O gauge and have only built a couple so far. I might revisit some of my plastic wagons for a change from brass. What I have found is the brake gear on some can be a bit of a challenge but I'm not sure what kind of detail they go into in OO scale. Hi Mark, If you do buy any of these kits in OO scale, mind and list them ( preferably with a photo showing the kit parts ) under rolling stock, kits, kit bashes and scratch builds section. If you can also reference OO scale in your title that way it's easier for folks to find and to differentiate between the various scales. When you come to cover the build, use the same thread so folks see the kit out of the box, and, the end result all under one thread. Again, it makes it easier for folks to make an informed choice as to if they like the kit. The above is not essential but helps to try and create a bit of uniformity and a standard throughout the,forum and folks get used to how to find things going forward. Hi mark, Just caught your post there. Great stuff and a nice bit of variance. As above, open a thread for each kit with wagon type etc Example Peco oo scale 4 plank,open wagon kit ...... or blah blah blah can kit. And if you will be so kind, follow it up with a photo,or two when it arrives. We are a bit behind with oo scale examples so you can be the trail blazer here. For whatever reason, O gauge fever has taken a grip but I'd like to see that imbalance change to encourage more OO scale stuff back onto the forum. I am always looking for ways of kicking off more OO scale competitions and this could maybe be it if enough folks are interested. I can see some wagon kits coming up qs potential prizes. if there is enough demand. Cheers Toto
Hi Toto when the kits arrive I will create a new thread in the above category. It will be nice to see some more OO gauge kits on the forum so others can reference.
The old Airfix kits - now marketed by Dapol are not bad either. I cut my teeth on Airfix kits many many years ago. I've also used Slaters and Parkside kits before as well. Paul
Great stuff mark. Something else that may take your fancy. I have just posted up the prize offering from Townstreet, one of our sponsors. The Citadel Station in OO scale. The nature of the competition in which you have the opportunity it to win it shall be announced sometime soon. These come in kit form and are made of plaster of Paris castings. PVA is used as a method of gluing these together and then they can be painted up to give some fantastic effects. ,maybe something of interest to you. Cheers for now Toto
Hi Mark, it's a bit late now you've ordered but I was about to mention that some kit suppliers don't include wheels and couplings. Something to bear in mind when costing. Cheers, Jim
Thanks Jim for the heads up. I made certain the wheels were included in the kit but I see Cambrian kits don’t have the wheels.
Hi Mark, glad to see you are back in the saddle mate . Slaters 00 kits are nice to build and make very good starters, I built mine a few years ago and still have a couple despite modelling in O gauge now. It will help to get them nice and level if you build them on something flat and level. I have found mirror tiles very useful as they are dead flat. Also, C/D's are very flat too. Bit too small for O gauge but spot on for 00. Enjoy yourself building them, there's nothing like saying, I did that! Cheers, Pete.
Pete I am looking forward to receiving the kits and making a start building. It will be good practice as I plan to build an o gauge kit some time in the future.
