Here's another of Connoisseur Models O gauge coach kits build, this time a brake third 6 wheeler.
It is one of two I bought last year at York show, since Toto and Dundee Paul started on their respective builds I thought it about time to make a start on mine.
As with most of Jim's kits it is very well designed for the novice as well as the more experienced builder.
At the moment I'm just at the beginning of the build, I've removed the sides and ends and cleaned the tabs and etch cusps, formed the tumblehomes, folded the tops and bottom bends and soldered in the window droplights.
At the moment I have just given the sides a good scrub and when they've dried I will post some photos up.

    Cheers, Pete.

Did a bit more today, as the sides have had a good scrub I made a start on fitting the door hinges, what a faff, still they needed doing but it took ages to just do one side, 5 hinges. I will try and get the other side done tomorrow, it shouldn't take as long as I now know what I'm doing. I'm not looking forward to doing the hinges on the composite, next in line.

With hinges on, not very clear on the photo.

I cannot find any reference to this etched hole on the centre-side of the window. I'm guessing it may be for the door lock perhaps?

Anyway, thats how far I am at the moment. I've got some furniture being delivered in the morning so will try and do some more in the afternoon, it depends on whether SWMBO wants me to assemble it straight away, maybe it will earn me some brownie points if I do :scratchchin::avatar:..........

    Cheers, Pete.

Pete that tiny hole half way up the door frame represents the escutcheon for the carriage door lock, usually the guards job to lock compartments out of use. great build pics btw:thumbup::tophat::tophat:

Coming on Pete. I must admit the hinges are a bind. I had 30 over the two sides. 10 doors ..... 3 per door.

you can hardly see them either. never mind ..... they are there so they go on.

keep up the good work Kind Sir.

Once I had sussed which way round they fit it became a lot easier. The first one I filed down all the cusps and etched links then discovered it fitted the tother way round and could have left the cusps alone as they won't be seen when finished :twitch:.

    Cheers, Pete.

With the 6 wheelers were all in the same boat, 5 doors per side 3 hinges per door and 2 sides 60 hinges in all, thank goodness Jim provides extras, as I'm still looking for some on the floor, who suggested carpet was a good idea.
Toto's 4 wheeler doesn't have a tumbleholme on the end, the 6 wheelers do, suggest bending the tumbleholme and buffer beam before fitting the coupling hook plate on the buffer beam, makes it easier to bend the buffer beam.

Who says the 4 wheelers dont have a tumblehome on the end ....... must just be due to a bit of over handling in my case then ..... :faint:

Well I had a fairly productive afternoon today. I have fitted the last 5 door hinges, the ventilators and the Guards duckets mind you I need to fire up the soldering iron again as one of the hinges became detached while soldering in one of the duckets.
At the moment, they are drying off after a good scrubbing with Jif type cleaner. Very useful for finding out if any parts aren't soldered on properly.
    IMG_2443.JPG
Next job, clean up the solder on the sides where it can be seen.

    Cheers, Pete.

Thank God for working from home and hayfever, that and they have shut to reclamation centers so even if I cut the grass there would be no where to rid of the stuff.

    It's comming on nicely Pete

Now the weather has got a bit cooler I have got back in the shed. First job was to fit the end steps and coupling plates, fold up and solder the buffer beams. Good scrubbing and then once dried off, assembled the sides and ends.
    IMG_2444.JPG

    IMG_2445.JPG

I have given them a scrub and when they've dried off I will tidy them up.
I also punched out the rivets on the solebars and I've folded one side ready for fitting the little brackets, not something I'm looking forward to......

Any way thats all for now, cheers, Pete.

A nice fit Pete. The tumblehome follows the contours nicely. How did you find these pesky vents ?

Unlike yours Toto the vents are a flat etched piece. I just tinned them on the back, plenty of flux on the carriage sides and sweated them on, some I had to re do as they came of with handling.

    Pete.
