Today the ABC helical gear motor set arrived... its 30:1 ratio and I'll do a trial test fit tomorrow. The gear mount is a slim line version designed to fit in the space between the compensation beams... my larger Ron Chaplin with two stage box will have to go back into store for use with something else.

Big leap forward today as the ABC motor and gear unit has been fitted into the main frames of Owen Glendower and tested, first as a unit with the rear coupling rod disconnected and then with the rods connected... absolutely no issues in either direction and at varying speed levels. The helical gear box is a VMS2 and the motor is a Cannon EN22 five core skew wound job... well worth the cost I'd say as the motor stays put without need for an anchor when polarity changes and it doesn't prevent the loco wheels from turning, something worth its weight testing for clearances when the valve motion is fitted and tested for free running. Probably well realised by established builders but for me its a revelation.

The gearing even misses the brake push arm bracket by a knats whisker and fits into the narrowed space between bushes on the compensation beam... what could be better? Well pleased with this.:tophat::thumbup:

That's excellent. In my 4mm days I used to use portescaps which had similar gears. They are far more efficient than worm and wheels and being able to rotate the wheels by hand can be a bonus when checking for binding etc. A nice heavy loco like the brit will run on a little after power is taken away too for extra smooth running

Sorry about the shaky old video but its the first one I've made and still really working out how to do it from my You Tube channel... anyway I spent this afternoon making pick up wipers and contacts. Enjoy folks and thanlks for watching.

I did take another video showing the wiper pick ups but it is such a faff i took this still pic to show how I made the wipers, they are hidden beneath the boiler and the wipers on the compensated wheels spring onto the back of the wheel flange and near the firebox bare down on to of the tyre acting to maintain electical continuity with the movement of the compensation beam. T wipers on the fixed forward wheel gently stroke the tyre flange.

Thanks Kim, its been a bit of a learning curve and not without apprehension but now I know what set up fits nicely into these kits and building the valve motion up with soldered rivets filed back afterwards is not as daunting as I first thought. Mind you the next kit doesn't have Walschaerts valve gear but comes with another set of potential problems... no its not GWR either but more about it all in good time.

No not the Duke but you are hugely close... actually it is a BR Standard Caprotti 5 with BR1D tender, see I like my standards... then an 8F (hopefully) followed in the new year by a Merchant Navy.

haha the caprotti standard 5 would have been my second guess. I too like standards. A standard 3 2-6-0 would interest me

Yes that's the one. I quite like them with the small boiler held quite high up. I will have to keep a look out for an acorn one. I see someone is selling an acorn br 02 diesel on Ebay and it has bids at £200. That kit is actually still in production at prmrp at something like £85-90. Crazy

As far as i am aware three different people I've conversed with all say the same thing about the 77XXX kit, that it is a complete nightmare to build properly and there is such a lot wrong with it anyway such as the boiler handrails being located incorrectly. You can get a brand new 77XXX kit from Scorpio for £255 so I'd be tempted to pass on someone else's second hand ebay pass it ons if I were you.

After a few setbacks and other non related delays which didn't do my Mojo much good today I finally got the valve gear motion set up and working nicely. The major setback to complete this bit of the jobs was that the return crank slipped on the crankpin or rather just wouldn't stay put, I felt it best to strip the whole motion down to basics and remove the centre driving wheelset for closer examination. In the end I decided to fit new extended crankpins and form a little groove in line with the slot on the crank pin head where I inserted a tiny piece of 0.45mm brass wire to act as a retaining cotter for the countersunk crankpin head... the whole was then bonded with Araldite and set to dry in the airing cupboard. Refitting the motion assembly proved easy with no issues and soI then fitted the valve motion, this time I soldered the return crank to the crankpin allowing solder to flow onto the nutage already screwed into position. The rest was a straight forward reassembly ensuring everything had clearance and was aligned correctly, the expansion link was aligned using a 12BA nut spun onto a 12BA pin set onto the motion bracket which had been reamed to take the thread, the nut setting the expansion link position allowed the radius rod to pass with clearance and also in the correct plane. Anyway here it is going at full pelt on the test bed.
