Ah But Toto has a 1200cc motor bike in the shed, rather than a big red bus outside.

Toto if you get a fridge, you'd better get a natress as well, as I think Lynne & Lulu will kick yer butt out. :avatar:

Looking good Paul. I've said it before and I'll say it again, "you chaps who build your own locomotives and rolling stock are in a league of your own..." Beautiful work indeed.

    Cheers, Gary.

Thanks Gary for the kind comment but I really don't see myself as anything other than someone who enjoys what they do. The challenge for me in kit building is a self discipline and not being frightened to make mistakes.

Ah yes Mr S indeed... the painting stage is the icing on the cake and the weathering will be the cherry on top. This is how 75030 will look when weathered... well probably not that grimy. Now a little known fact is I actually saw this loco at Leek station as a kid on many occasions so I guess all I am doing in my model making is recreating my childhood in some strange way.

So back to the intricacies of the Riddles cab with all its various angles which need to be aligned correctly, I was never very happy with this part of the build as the cab refused to meet the firebox properly, so last night I put gentle heat from the micro flame desoldering the cab and starting again, once all old solder was scrubbed back and parts cleaned up it became obvious where the fault commenced... it was the cab front piece and the footplate fall which had been fixed incorrectly leading back and only minimally off centre.... oh dear what must I have been doing for that to happen. Anyway I resoldered the cab front as the start point to rectification so it was vertically aligned, this gave the datum point for the sides else to follow, the next issue was to keep the cab floor level with the fall angle mirroring the cab side profile, so with the footplate screwed to the chassis and the boiler dry fitted I came up with this solution.

The engineers square keeps the cab floor correct relative to the cab front, now I can set the sides so they meet properly on all faces but first I shall cut the glazing out whilst access is easy.

“To go forwards, you sometimes need to take a step back” sounds and looks like you have sorted this issue out Paul. Those wheels look very nice, have you blackened them?

The wheels are only thinly airbrush coated with Railmatch Black that's all, agreed sometimes it pays dividends to revisit previous work and in this instance having gained experience make improvements, at least it sets me up in the correct frame of mind for the Caprotti 5 build.

Glazing for the front spectacle windows is cut and trimmed to shape, these will fit snugly into the appertures and the brass bezel will cover the edges so the window is flush, I used thin transparent sheet and first cut a template which then made the cutting shape left and right hand side. I'll tin and sweat the bezel into place later and then add the glazing once painted. Now to fit the cab sides and then cut that glazing.
Hope my technique is a useful tip for folks thinking of doing a BR Standard... in fact I'd say this would work for any loco really.

Very often one of the concerns in returning to a part built kit is remembering where the build stopped and locating all remaining parts needed to complete the build, its not unknown for small bits to go missing or even never having had them supplied in the first instance and the regulator handle for 75030 is no exception. Try as I might it just wasn't there and so not wasting further time I made a new one from suitably adapted unusable ACME etches from the scrap box, in this instance the thin end of the valve rod from the Ivatt 2 build and some 0.7mm nickel rod came to the rescue. Never let it be said these old ACME kits are hard work, they certainly are not wrong when they say they are an aid to scratch building... in my case the job took all of about five minutes to do. :avatar::thumbup:

excellent idea. Ive been considering how to do the glazing on my west country. I have the added problem the the cab front window frames are whitemetal castings. They are also massively undersized. What where you saying about acme kits.....

I think this method of glazing will work ... I used Glue 'n Glaze canopy glue and it seems to have held things in place so far, the Standard 4 is a tad different due to the way the cab front etch is designed in being a one piece unit as opposed to half etch side flares needing to be fixed to a firebox back plate. As I had everything in pieces I could mark, cut and trim the glazing with easy access, once fitted into place the outer bezel holds the glazing and internal cab painting will grip the edges without blurring the windows... obviously the glazing won't be fitted until after prime and finish coating is done.

Just ordered a VML2 26:1 ratio helical gearbox with Cannon EN22 from Brian at ABC for the BR Standard Class 4 loco... he is on with the job right now and money is winging its way to him as we speak. 75030 will very soon be another long term shelf queen turned into a nice addition to the fleet.

The cab area is now reassembled and sits a lot better than it did originally, I going to fit the draft screens again hence the earlier back end arrangement.

A much nearer job all round I think... and I even found the white metal wind shield frames which I'll glue on as they are way too fine to solder. I must straighten out that bent hand rail.

Also fitted the boiler support brackets along the running boards on both sides and fitted support stays behind the front steps... although you cannot see them from this angle.

Put the loco footplate and boiler back on its wheels and it lines up nicely with the tender.

Just a couple more smallish holes to drill into the firebox to take handrail knobs and then the boiler can be soldered to the footplate and we will have complete alignment then. Next job is to dress the boiler and start the plumbing, when the new motor gearbox arrives I'll swap the second hand Mashima out which I bought years ago that will then allow me to fit the valve gear and complete this build.

If you go for this kit beware you will be in for some real work, as Toto and Dundee will vouch when they saw this loco in it's earlier build stage. The cylinder saddle spacing cut out slots on the mainframe are quite wrong and needs expanding in width... so a reference drawing is needed, I have one which I will send you if you go for this kit. Also the firebox wrappers (as I currently discovered) when soldering the boiler to frames don't align properly, well the outline shape aligns with the inner firebox skeleton framework and mainframe chassis contour next to the ashpan but the detailing such as the washout plugs on the fireman's side are all to pot... the port which locates the fountain casting on top of the firebox is also misaligned when the two halves of the wrapper come together. If you try altering the location of the fireman's side wrapper then the whole thing goes on skewed with a daylight gap underneath at the ashpan. This kit only had replacement motion bracket lost wax castings added to easy construction, the original Jim Harris fabrication parts are still on the etch frame so Scorpio have not really reworked these etches inthe same way as they did with some other BR standard kits from the old Transport Age range. One tell tale sign was this kit was sold and came wrapped as a flat pack under the Transport Age banner whereas the Brit was rebadged in a solid box as a Seven Models Kit, I also wouldn't touch the 77XXX class 3 Mogul with a barge pole nor the 76XXX Pocket Rocket which Pat Ennis says isn't fit for purpose in its current state... He won't release this kit until some serious redesign work has been undertaken so he told me recently.
