Looking great Pete. Terrific job. I'll be giving the Ramsbottom the same treatment shortly hopefully.

I spent quite a while fitting the wiring for the pickups then when I came to fit the motor it wouldn't go in . The copper clad and wires reduced the gap between the frames so much I've had to completely re think how to proceed. I have removed the wires from the copper clad and fitted them to the frames in front of the motor. I will take some photos later, it's easier to show than describe.
Next I fitted the motor and gears. The worm on the motor shaft wouldn't mesh with the gear on the axle. I've elongated the screw holes and got them meshing. One thing I've noticed is when I tighten the tiny screws holding the motor in place, the worm end lifts slightly so I have slipped a bit of thin plasticard as a spacer, all is lined up now and works when I apply some power.

I will, hopefully fit all the wheels and axles tomorrow with the rods and give it a run. Then it will be time to make a start on my coach build as Toto and Paul Dundee are getting well into their builds and I'm feeling left out :avatar:.

    Cheers, Pete.

Don't worry about the coach ...... you'll soon catch us up I'm sure of that. :avatar: get some photos up as maybe some suggestions will flow for you. it is a great build and I am sure you'll conquer it. I think Dundee had an issue with a short worm. I may have a longer version somewhere if its required .... just let me know.

fingers crossed for you. I believe you are a man of many means.

At last I have managed to almost "finish" the chassis. The main problem was getting the motor to fit between the frames as the pickup was to thick, anyway I had to start from fresh but the copper clad was stuck too well and had to be left in. Luckily there was just enough room for the motor but I have had to wrap it with some insulation tape.

Now the observant will notice the lack of coupling rod bearings, I have put them somewhere safe :faint:
So until either the new ones arrive from Slaters along with a set of wheels for the other J69, or I find the original ones, I'm unable to finish it.
Still, not a problem. I have made a start on my coach build, detailed elsewhere.

    Cheers, Pete.

If you struggle Pete, I may be able to find some. Sure I had seen some somewhere. Let me know.

Nice work Pete. How easy is it to bet your wheels and axles back in now the brake rigging is in place ?

It is a bit of a faff getting them in and out but it can be done.
The crankpin bearings arrived ok but with the coach build on going I haven't got round to the loco yet. I was looking at fitting the coach roof but still being able to take it off for detailing, passengers etc. Anyway, it involves an 8ba nut and while going through my stash I found the errant crank pin bushes .

    Cheers, Pete.

Wow, nearly Christmas! I didn't realise I hadn't posted for so long!
Anyway, I have been struggling to get the chassis to run smoothly it would lurch around like a drunken sailor. After giving it an indepth coat of looking at I realised that the motor holding bracket I had fashioned myself wasn't straight and the gears weren't meshing correctly. After much faffing and turning the air blue I managed to get the bracket out and have now fitted a fold up gear box, even that wasn't straight forward as the axle bearings I had to use were smaller O/D than the old ones, still after more faffing it is now back together and running so much better.

While I was in the shed I also fitted the cab door opening beading and the hand rails, not a lot but something.

    Cheers, Pete.

The chassis looks impressive. Certainly ly better engineered than the ace one. I may get a premier chassis for mine. I bought the premier rods which have a different wheelbase than the ones in the kit similar to those on my bulleid. Looking at my kit I disnt get any cast sandboxes

I believe the chassis is also Premier Components though there is nothing in the kit of parts to confirm it. The previous owner didn't keep any paperwork with it. I'm using a Connoisseur J69's kit instructions as a guide. Some parts are missing, I'm having to make my own as I go along though the sand boxes are included.

    Cheers, Pete.

I have the ace instructions which incould scan. Although they may confuse you as they arnt very good. I've bought several ace kits brand new which have had bits missing. William at ace is usually pretty good at sending them although he will probably charge you as your kit is second hand.

Thanks Paul, I reckon I should be ok as most of the bigger parts are already assembled or identified and the smaller ones that are missing I've scratch built or replaced with better quality castings.
Your offer is really good of you regardless, it's great how us modellers can rally round with help and advice when we need it.

    Cheers, Pete.

No problem at all. I agree it's one of the great things about this hobby.

The instructions are slightly confusing. They are typical william and reference components which arnt relevant to the kit. I'm planning on building mine as one of the earlier j69's which had the wide tanks but with the narrower cab. You have to cut the cab sides on the tanks and inset them. Theres only a very vague instruction on how to do it and identifying the relevant parts has been tricky

Having started my own J69 i can confirm that the instructions are absolute rubbish. I read them once and then ignored them. They refer to bits that arn't included in the kit. They simply dont make any sense.

Back in the saddle now I can use my new shed for modelling.
Any way I have restarted with the J69 and have fitted the front and rear steps, to be fair they aren't the best of etchings but they have gone together fairly well. I also put some reinforcing behind them, not the tidiest of finish but they won't be seen and a coat of paint will hide a multitude of errors.

    DSCI0012.JPG

I've also installed a plasticard floor scribed to look like wood planks, I may try and put some grain effect later.

    DSCI0013.JPG

    Some cleaning up to do.

    Front.

    DSCI0014.JPG

Also knocked up the two tank extensions out of plasticard as they also were missing from the etches, a little rough but should clean up nicely once they have had a while to harden up.

    DSCI0018.JPG

I've also fitted the rear window coal bars, a very fiddly job, I should have done it while in the flat!

Any way thats it for now.

    Cheers, Pete.

Looking good. Mine came with a floor but it possibly wouldnt have helped you as it only fits the narrow cab version.

    Looking good Pete,

I find giving plasticard a quick rub over with a wire brush does an acceptable job of simulating wood grain

I have seen a few models where the extension tanks are missing. I wonder if they weren't included in the original ravenscale kit (which yours apears to be). The latest ace version includes them as a seperate item. Not all locos had them but a wide cab/tank version similar to yours should have them.
