Well it seems I'm waiting for dmu stuff to arrive now so attention switches from Class129's to the tank room build on the Leek station layout, here is the result of today's work where the inner wall panels have been been built up, lots more to do yet but its getting there. The water tower stands on platform 2 near to the waiting shelter, so with luck once I've got this building made up I shall be able to calulate the distance between both and work out the radius of the platform curvature, once done I can mark out the track segment and cut the ply sheeting to suit. That's when this layout scene will start to take shape and the A52 road bridge can go in as well.

The dark grey areas on the right side corner is where the stone texture has been built up using Squadron Putty, this is a nice product to work with and is ideal for sculpting textures with it does need good ventilation to prevent vapour build up. All the outer stone courses needs this treatment as the inner wall panels are smooth dressed stone.

Meanwhile, the task master set me on to the top half, designing a braithwaite water tank top. Not easy when so little can be found on the internet and your working off a 50+ year old B&W photo when what your looking at was not the focus of attention on that day..

anyway, here is what we did.... each panel is 28mm x 28mm in 7mm scale with around 2.5mm thick. Making a scale 4ft x 4ft panel.

    644F51B8-C003-4D79-82BB-ED7529A410D7.jpeg

version 2 (totally redesigned from V1 in a different program.) This lacked the rivet details and the diagonal braces were too thick and the wrong shape.

    progressing on....

here we have V3 (right) and V4 left. V3 had the diagonals thinned but the ends were wrong and shouldn’t be chamfered but blend in. As can be seen on V4 (left) you can see a small difference.

So with that finalises, we needed 3 different panes. A fully squared panel, and a left and right handed one for the corners where they are chamfered.

And inside.. this shows the angled/chamfered ends.

but more fun was when I could add water! :giggle:

    the final design.

This last couple of days have been spent working out size dimensions for the chimney stack which once warmed the water in the tank to prevent freezing on frosty nights, the result on the model is reasonably passable and who would know anyway given that this little know feature was removed from the tank sixty odd years ago with the changeover from steam to diesel services along the valley.

And an overhead birds eye view.

There are plenty of photos showing the tank without the chimney and a few close up shots showing the chimney in an end on view taken in the late 1950's when the Welsh Chieftain Lounge car came through attached the rear of a special working but views fro the canal basin are nigh on non existent. The best I could find was this blurry snap shot of the Cauldon Canal basin at Leek with the tank in the background. Photographer unknown.

Here is the result with model posed in at a similar angle to the original in the photo... lots of Plasticard off cut wastage on my inside winter time work bench.

That is very much appreciated Dundee and I guessed this was what you were waiting for, the tank panels had to be ordered from a third party who are still processing my order but it will see this build item completed. I seem to have everything on the go and now't much completed... I'm still waiting for gearboxes paid for back in October and kits which haven't been sent out yet... yes I couldn't resist doing a Toto in buying another loco kit.:avatar:

Found half a bottle of resin, so we will see if we can get the Doors with windows printed - fingers crossed for the next 4 hours

6 being printed - I know you need 5 but we'll go for a spare just in case

Just in case you were wondering about the door threshhold - this is a support added to keep the door frame in place to stop it twisting during printing and during the post cure process, but can easily cut away later. I've recessed the plate so you should be able to cut to the frame easily.

Wow thanks Paul this will bring the station build on heaps... do you think you might have enough resin to do all the window units ?

I love the NSR architecture. Cheddleton looks like a miniature gothic mansion, it almost makes me want to go back 12 years and crack out the black eyeliner and teen angst

Well there's good news and bad news

1st the bad news - three door frames failed

As three printed without issue I will assume it's probably a levelling issue.

The good news is I already had three of these frames printed from the previous tests.

Luckily the three failed prints came off the FEP film without issue, as unlike all the other Anycubic printers I've bought this one didn't come with a spare FEP, so any damage to the fep will render the printer dead.

I had ordered replacement FEP sheets from a UK based Ebay supplier, supposed to arrive within 7 days - I was given a tracking number (however Ebay warn of delays due to Covid), after 14 days they hadn't arrived. I raised the issue with Ebay and the seller, which you then need to wait another 7 days. No response from the seller who was now showing as un-listed. I contacted Ebay again, and they checked the issue and refunded me my money within an hour.

More on order but this time from China via Amazon. There are not many stockist holding the larger FEP sheets that these printers require.

Anyway, print bed levelled, and the next print started - 5 hours to go

    upload_2021-1-3_0-6-16.png

    These are the remaining doors.

The windows have all been printed but have the nip in the sides at the mid lintel.

Once all the bits are cured up I will package them up and send them to you. I haven't enough resin to re-print them. That's not quite correct, there is enough resin to create the prints just not enough to fill the vat to allow the prints to be done.

    And the prints came out

Just need to allow these to dry before curing other wise they will have white staining.

The a count up of all the bits, and see if the post office is open tomorrow - remember we have two bank holidays at the New Year and we are in Tier 4 lockdown.

That is a superb job nicely done Paul... if it is not possible to post because of restrictions and the such then not too worry as I'm very grateful for everything you have done or are doing.:tophat::thumbup:

Now I've been thinking to the future for one possible use for the Leek layout and what may become possible once all this Covid is gone... or at least it becomes safe to meet in groups and wonder if the layout could become a sort of temporary garden set up for members to meet on designated days in the year to run the locos and photograph them in a natural light setting. Obviously York is out of the question for some of our overseas members unless they were visiting on holiday but is within realistic reach from the Midlands and North. I'm planning on making this layout in segments which are portable and can be set up in my garden which is 160 feet or so long x 100 feet wide... so there is plenty of room space for a layout of some 25 feet in length. Obviously practicalities need to be worked up and accommodated for e.g protection against the elements but I do think this could be something Platform 1 could offer for members. Anyway over to you chaps for feedback... I think that is the least I can do since I'm constantly bombing the forum with my project updates.:avatar:

I was thinking more along the lines of a temporary set up on good weather weekends and something a lot less in length

Yes I thought it would be semi-temporary, so as to aid it getting past the very local planning authority (Lis) the end at the bottom of the garden would have a decked area with an overhanging roof, so Art classes could be done either indoors or out on the deck, of course it could be further enhanced with a mini bar and grill  :avatar:

Glad to be of help in the development process :hammer:
