This loco build is coming on great Paul and I know what you mean about filling out big gaps... I went that option with the Brit choosing not to fill the firebox corners with solder. How did the fine Milliput work ? and would you recommend it as its not really a product I use.

I normally use car body filler which tends to be the consistency of paste and easy to apply. With these gaps being so large i wasn't sure it would work so I chose milliput as it has a slightly thicker consistency more akin to plasticine. It doesnt spread or flatten out as easy as body filler and is quite sticky but is much better for bridging large gaps. The technique i arrived at was to roll a piece about the size i needed and press it in the gap. I then relied on my electric sanding tool to shape it. It sets extremely solid and you can almost machine it.

One thing I've found with Milliput is that it is easy to smooth before it sets with a bit of saliva on your finger tip.

    Cheers, Pete.

I have never really been that happy with the profile of the firebox on my loco. As I have built it the firebox top has ended up almost horizontal. The drop towards the cab should be much greater. This not only looked wrong when viewed side on but the castings for the top/front of the firebox would not fit. There was a pronounced Lip. I decided to attempt to rectify this by making a saddle about 1mm thick out of milliput. This was laid onto the top of the firebox and left a few hours to set. Once set i feathered it into the etches by sanding. I have sprayed it with some grey acrylic paint just to see what it would look like under paint and to identify any areas which will need filling or sanding. A quick dunk in Detol will remove this. I've lost the boiler bands which can be replaced but the profile of the firebox looks much more like I imagine it should.

The rear truck makes into a nice robust piece. Unfortunately it looks like a couple of small castings are missing. Rather predictably, the pivot hole is too far back and the truck will not fit. Options are to fill the old hole and drill one further forward or move the screw back.

I am now in the process of putting the boiler bands on. Its now a Pacific too. Im just waiting on a set of valvegear from premier components to progress the chassis. ignore the dodgy grey paintwork. That was put on to check id filled all the gaps in the firebox and is gradually being removed.
I notice there is currently another of these kits on ebay. i might be tempted for a second one but the price (despite it containing wheels has put me off)

I notice that someone is selling a built version of this kit on ebay. The builder hasnt corrected any of the obvious errors in the kit and it looks rather odd to my eye. Its currently got bids up to £550. Best get mine built it must be worth at least 50p lol

Loco is looking rather good Paul and the one on the bay is a West Country... currently its not far short of buying a new Finney 7 kit which would be correct. Sorry I've not commented back on your work sooner but I,m having to rest a bit as I've overdone the old knee joints a tad too much ... very painful but getting better thankfully.

Good to know your on the mend and thank you. im still undecided on the identity of the loco yet. The rebuilt west countrys and battle of britains where pretty standard locos (unlike the original ones or the merchant navys). I havent got far enough with the detailing to have to make a decision on the specific loco yet

A small amount of progress to report, with some of the large castings soldered in place. I am just trying to work out what the myriad of small castings and pipework included in the kit. Much of the pipework bares little resembles to the real thing so i will be raiding the garage for some twin and earth cable to use for the copper pipes

The steps supplied in the kit are whitemetal and where broken before they even got near the kit. here is my attempt at scratchbuilding from 0.9mm wire. I will have a go at doing similar for the tender rear ladders as they are similarly whitemetal castings

Not much progress to report. other than the valvegear is mostly complete. its a mixture of premier components and part from the kit. For some reason there is no reversing lever included in the kit. I have been struggling to locate a manufacturer of lost wax brass crossheads so have used the cast whitemetal ones. These will hopefully be replaced. I have contacted William at Ace products who do several different bulleid pacifics and he says he can supply me with some. A previous attempt to procure some from Finney7 was fruitless. The photos really show up how much dust is on the loco which is barely visible to (at least my) naked eyes

    Hi Paul,

You may get some from Ragstone models.

I am a bit surprised that you struggled to get them from Finney7, I have bought cast crossheads from them for my W1.

    Regards Rob

To be honest I only made one attempt to call them but they havent responded to my email. I've ordered a set from william at ace. I did think about ragstone but although they sell a lot of bulleid parts they dont seem to have cross heads and slidebars. I will be ordering a brittania set from them for the clan

I realise it's been well over a year since I posted anything. I've not done a huge amount of modelling due to moving jobs and doing those things we couldn't during lockdown. I've made a small amount of progress mainly on the chassis. She runs reasonably well.

She's heavily tarnished from.being left on the shelf for 12 months. A good clean and hopefully finish the detailing. I've had to make some front cab windows as the castings supplied where hopeless
