    Paints dry enough to handle

I'll apply the filler in the morning, may be very late morning if the superbowl is any good, first time in years I'll be able to watch the game.

    Ah, what livery mmmmm

Having issues determining the correct colour for Highland Railway loco green after WW1 - the HR was way ahead of the rest of the country, first 4-6-0, and then austerity with nae lining, can't see why I might find this appealing.

For the more observant who may have spotted slight diferences in some of the photo's, I've being using the model printed at 15 degrees as a guinea pig for most processes, and it still looks reasonable, so this may be painted in LMS, probably period 2, as I have a couple of Ian Kirk Period 2 coaches to build. This would be an easy unlined black, but could easily be the base for BR as well.

When I do the etches, as there was only 4 built, and only 3 made it into BR days, I may just knock up a full set of number plates for all eventualities.

Keeps my options open and I get something easier to learn on.

Hi Paul I have enjoyed catching up with your build. It's all looking super and can't wait to see what livery you decide.

    G`day Paul,
I have just caught up with your progress on the build and I must say that this is very impressive.......but only because of your perseverance and never give up attitude has such a beautiful little loco come into the light of day.
Your rating on this project must be a 6 thumbs up out of a maximum 5..........:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

    Thanks Guys

Reflecting on this, I have wondered if I could have built the model via normal methods - possibly, but probably not as good tho'.
Price wise making the body in plasticard would have been cheaper, but a good bit of the 3D printing costs have been from lots of test prints to see how it's going to look. The next locomotive will probably not be printed until the model is just about completed - well it may happen :avatar:

Livery - now this has been fun, initialy I'm looking for the post 1916 Cummings livery, which according to Highland Railway Liveries by Howard Geddes and Eddie Bellass the body colour is Moss green - not Light Moss Green of 1912 to 1916 (Smith period).

Normally I would get the Precision Paints enamel, then try and match it to someones acrylic - but Precision don't do the HR Moss green, so I've ordered up Tamiya XF 26 Deep Green and XF 73 Dark Green. Well see, as long it's close ish, and I use the same colour for most loco's it will only be an issue if it plays with others.

Forgot to say, for LMS and BR versions I should have rivet detail on the smokebox front and sides - maybe in the next version of the loco body

I do fancy 55051 in plain black with British Railways on the tank sides (circa 1949) or if I get brave enough the fully lined out BR black Lion and wheel logo 55053 (circa 1955)

    Hi Paul,
Have you considered gathering your shades of green, plus white, from the same manufacturer and mixing your own shade of green..??
It would require careful measuring of the portions to enable you to repeat it, plus if I was you, I would make up one batch that was sufficient to do the whole job and then some more.
You would need to test first as well, because the paint will dry a slightly different shade to what you see in the tin.
    Just a thought.......:scratchchin:

Given that there are very few - if any alive to remember the Highland Railway from first hand, plus memory is very subjective, and paint was mixed by eye, I think I'll get away with it :avatar:

Interestingly, the books state the green was created from Chrome Yellow + Lamp Black, and the improved recipe replaced the Chrome Yellow with Yellow Ochre.
Black and White photo's of the period are un-reliable as yellow comes out black - hence the photographic grey pictures to give the correct impression of the livery, compared with pictures in the wild from the same periods looking like different liveries.

Just got to wait for the paint to arrive now, nuts does that mean I need to start the chassis.

Finally got some snow - only a slight covering, but it's still trying, were up to 8" so far - I know as I've just dug the car out.

I can finally hold my head up, we have snow, no not a mere covering of the white stuff under 3 inches (75mm in that new fangled stuff).
I have cleared 8" of snow from the drive and road entry twice now, in the back garden it's up to my knees, the dog thinks he's some kind o young pup, bunny hopping all over the place as his legs arn't long enough and the cat keeps wanting to go out, does an instant 180 with a look on his face "forget that".

I have created a test model for the wee valve like bits at the bottom of the smokebox

    upload_2021-2-10_11-0-3.png

And for a change printing them on one of the original Photons - approx 2 hours to go

    Time for a coffee

Lots of snow........I`ve only ever been in snow once in my life.
By the way Paul......I think Morag probably said " Could you please put the washing out ".......not the washing machine mate.....
Well I guess it makes more room for 3D printers.......:avatar::avatar::avatar::avatar:
The fine little parts are looking good too.......

The washing machine packed in about a year ago, and the disposal site / collection has been closed due to covid .

Spawn of SWMBO got stranded here last knight, so we tried to get to her house this afternoon, managed to find somewhere to park that didn't require too much digging out to then go and dig our way into her house. The front door is 6 steps below the road level, and yes the level was over two feet deep.

I now have parts of my body aching that I didn't even knew I had :headbanger: :avatar:

And to top it off the photon prints didn't like the light support settings, so I will need to change the settings and try again. I now have some of the Plant based resin to try, according to the forums the same setting should work - we'll see.

Just ordered up some 0.2mm x 50mm x 5m Stainless Steel sheet, to etch the coupling rods from - downside is it's from Hong Kong so will take a few weeks to get here - I may have the rod's artwork completed by then - well maybe :whatever: :avatar:

On the bending jigs, I tried a little experiment

I scaled the original former to 125%, 75% & 50% and then printed them out.

The original size is in the bottom left corner, with the 125% above with the 75% and 50% to the right.

I then formed the handrail using the 75% jig, and was so much easier, the final hand rail being shown in the soldering jig.

I also used the 125% jig to easily form the initial curve for the smokebox door.

More work on the front valves - are these the snifters ?

    upload_2021-2-11_15-26-39.png

I rounded off the handle, then loaded the file into Lychee slicer app.

Rotated the part through 90 degrees to have the mounting stem pointing down.

1st attempt auto applied light supports, and these all failed.

2nd attempt I auto applied medium supports - these looked too heavy, so I deleted all of them apart from the one supporting the mounting stem. Then manually applied thin supports to each end and an additional one to support the upper collar

    upload_2021-2-11_15-36-0.png

    then copied by 10

    upload_2021-2-11_15-25-14.png

Printed and 1 out of 11 almost made it but most of the base layers stuck to the FEP.

These were the default settings for the Photon

    upload_2021-2-11_15-39-33.png

    So modified the settings to

120 sec for the bottom layer cure time (or exposure depending on the software)
    8 Layers

    Normal exposure to 12 sec

    upload_2021-2-11_15-41-50.png

Now hear a satisfying snap as the print bed lifts and separates from the FEP

an hour and a half later

Easily broke away from the supports without any damage

Opened the hole in the smokebox to 0.8mm and inserted the valve

Paul my hat goes off to you guys who have use of a 3D printer. It makes life so much easier when designing and making smaller parts, nice work Paul.:tophat:
