My railway is pure fiction, but designed with the aim of being plausible, it is freight and industry based in the era of BR steam and green diesel, working primarily in 1:76 scale, OO gauge with DCC for loco driving only.

The railway is centred on a marshalling yard out in the sticks attached to a busy trunk line which also sees some passing passenger traffic.

Geographic location has become set in the north east of England based on the industries portrayed which in turn was dictated by what rolling stock was available RTR.

Although I did enjoy building wagons in my youth, time and eyesight are no longer on my side to build a large fleet of wagons. These days I only build what I cannot buy RTR or modify from RTR.

My preferred region is the Midland but most of my smaller freight locos working the branches are J94 with a number of J39 and J11 so coincidentally it has become biased to the Eastern region.

    Overview

The marshalling yard is primarily a hub for traffic to and from two branches to connect with the trunk line. The yard has loco servicing facilities for branch and visiting locos, a wagon repair works and a small PW yard.

The industrial branch has rail interfaces to a motor works, heavy electrical engineers, a colliery, cement works, chemical works and two small scale industries at it's tail end.

The port branch feeds various docks for general merchandise, concrete works, rail to road oil transfer terminal, grain silos, heavy mineral docks.
It further leads on to a ferry port for international traffic, a larger colliery and steelworks which are all imagined by a fiddle yard.

Generally I model just the rail interfaces of these industries and smaller docks

A symbolic map of the intended layout shows the overall plan.

To be continued, as they say, Jim.

Wow - well thought through, is this to be a multi level affair abit like the our North American bretherin aspire too, and how much space do you have available.
Looking forward to the next installment.

I'm with Paul, it looks to be a well thought out and working towards the prototype. Well done!

    Cheers, Pete.

It's evolved due to me using AnyRail and moving from a flat earth railway to 3 main levels and some mezzanine levels, apart from the numerous inclines, so it is somewhat American in that style just like it is intended to be an operational layout. I recall Kathy Millet making the observation in one of her inspiring videos last year or so comparing UK and US layouts. So a lot packed in with very little space to move operators, just me anyway and the eventual reason for the layout name will become obvious later. :avatar:

It is a series I have started writing to help the increasing number of retirees get started on their 2nd childhood. Having drooled at toyshop windows the first time around, retiring with some money and space beyond our pocket money days we can start again. Much has changed in the 30-40 even 50 years gap between childhoods. There seems to be a surge of retirees returning to their childhood memories of real railways or their favourite toys before reality got in the way both on here and another site I post to.
It's separate to my other series like the Cement Works and is more a philosophical (thanks spell checker) view about separating the wood from the trees to realise a dream. :scratchchin:

Aye the generation that computer games just got too fast and repetative, time to settle down and do some serious glue, paint & paint thinner sniffing, after all we've survived this far.

After all I've now finally became a skiver - Spend Kids Inheritance Via Early Retirement  :avatar:
