"He's never at it again, is he?!"

(Yes, you lot may very well say that! [IMG])

Since my first effort into this kit-bashing malarkey was fairly well received (as can be seen here), another attempt at kitbashing the well-known Knightwing 0-4-0 diesel industrial shunter was in order. The purpose of this second time at creating a freelance loco, was to build on the lessons I learned from the first go. One such lesson so far was getting the frame proportions as accurate as possible, but we'll get to that.

Having received the Knightwing diesel shunter kit as a birthday present, now seemed an appropriate time to commence work. Taking a spare Kato 109 chassis and some leftover 0.5mm Plasticard from last time, I got cracking.

Seen here are some of the pieces laid out, prior to surgery of the body sides and bonnet (please note, that normal photography is resumed for this project!)...

The first item of business was to measure out and create the running plate. Using the standard gauge running plate as a template (with a hole in the middle big enough to fit the chassis through, with some slight cutting of the sides), I cut the plasticard around it. Keeping the pieces held together, I then drilled small holes in each corner, to act as guides when cutting out the hole for the chassis to fit in. A near-perfect fit was achieved, as you will see shortly.

Here is a comparison of running plates:

Meanwhile, the main body was taking shape. Like the first Knightwing bash, the body was cut roughly in half, to enable a good fit over the running plate, as and when the cab is assembled.

    Progress, as of this minute...

Obviously there's still a fair way to go before you see anything that resembles a locomotive (a great deal of work on the running plate, most notably), but I hope you like the slow and steady progress so far. More on this kit-bash, as and when it develops.

    Comments are welcome as ever.

Small progress made today, with the addition of the cab sides. But before they were glued on, small holes were drilled by the doors and underneath the side windows, for wire handrails to be added.

The back end of the cab will be added, once the interior is made up and the windows are glued into place.

Meanwhile, the framework continues to take shape. After trimming down the running plate to give an adequate fit for the body to sit on, buffer beams and side plates were added. And as with last time, some select parts from the standard gauge kit will be utilised and incorporated into the build. For example, one of the steps has already been trimmed down and cut in half, glued at either end on one side of the frames so far.

(Excuse the blurriness; had a second-hand Canon EOS camera handed to me, and still getting some practice in using it.)

Among a few of the next tasks is to create a false floor to fit snugly into the cab interior, as well as some selective detailing. Work will also continue on the main part of the body, but with a few additions to make it different from the original kit bash.

    More to follow...

    Hi David

Good progress into what is looking like a good looking loco.

Thanks Paul. Still a fair way to go before it's running, but I'm real pleased with the job in hand, so far.

I have one of these in my stash, I may get a second and bash a centre cab double ended version on the bogie chassis I bought a while back. I need to get my ruler out and have a measure up!

    Pete.

Good luck Pete; hope it turns out how you want it to! Thanks.

This morning's visit from the postman saw me take receipt of a few items from RT Models. They include a pair of electric style headlamps (Code 4NLP001), a pair of 2/3 relief air tanks (Code 4NLP002) and a pair of flexible couplings (Code 4NLP021). All these items found their way onto both the body and the framework, alongside the battery box and the brake cylinder from the standard gauge kit.

Plus, an exhaust pipe was added (again, by cutting one of the standard gauge axles and trimming it down a little), as well as the horn, side rails and front headlights. Here's what the body looks like with the electric headlamp fitted at the front (the ones on the side will act as secondary/reversing lights)...

...And from the rear (mounted on a small piece of plasticard):

On the roof top, a small hole was drilled at the front, and a spare off-cut from somewhere in the kit glued into position, to act as a radio antennae.

The relief air tanks were positioned at the front of the frames, with the batter box to the rear of the right hand side, and the brake cylinder to the rear of the left.

Finally for now, the flexible couplings were made by drilling fine holes through the guiding points on both the couplings and mounting blocks, threading the wire through them, and then gluing and bending the wire ends into position:

Still quite a way to go and a lot more detail to add, but things are really beginning to take shape.

    More to follow...

Some quick progress made on the frame work, including the fitting of brake pipes, flexible couplings and false floor.

The brake pipes were sourced as spares from a Dundas Vale of Rheidol brake van kit. With small holes drilled into the buffer beams to act as guides, they were glued into position.

The flexible couplings were next to be glued into position...

The false floor was measured and cut out (with the corners trimmed to fit the inside tabs of the cab), then glued onto the two tabs that are acting as the base for the floor.

With the frame work just about complete, a trip to the paint shop is on the cards...

    More to follow.

Time for another update, starting with the progress made thus far...

With almost all the components fixed onto both the body and the framework, it was off to the paint shop to have their coat of grey primer applied, before going into their respective colours.

The whole frame work including the running plate, brake hoses, couplings and floor went into plain black, while the brake pipes, buffer beams and coupling blocks went into red.

The primary colour for the main body was Humbrol Crimson (Code 20, Gloss), with the front grille in black and yellow, black hand rails and side grilles. The top of the cab roof was put into black, with white underneath for the interior. The headlights were put into black on the outside, with white on the insides.

Another coat or two may be needed, but now the locomotive is beginning to come alive...

A little detailing work in the cab was carried out.

Firstly, a random Bachmann engine driver in a 'seated' position was found and, after some surgery needed (don't even ask!), was glued into place.

Next came a handbrake made at random, using a wheel from a parcels trolley kit, and a short strip of black plastic. The 'wheel' was painted red.

Thirdly, a Faller H0/00 fire extinguisher found its way onto the top of the dashboard.

Meanwhile, after some slight touches of paint, the control panel was glued on, as was the rear cab end. The edges and roof linings were given a quick coat of crimson to make them look more smart.
