I recently bought this digital microscope (up to 200X). For those of us with ever failing eyesight I figured this device might make life easier when doing any fine work. I picked it up on eBay for $152 AUD (with free postage). There are cheaper/more expensive models with different magnification levels and features but this one seemed to suit my needs the best.

This model has two adjustable LED lights, an attached switch to turn on/off and adjust light levels. Takes a micro SD card to allow capture of video/audio/stills as displayed on the screen. A remote to adjust magnification and many other options. Focus is manual by rotating the ring on the lens below the screen. Working whilst looking at the screen doesn't take long to get used to and I expect doing fine work will now be a lot easier.

You can also display a grid on the screen (see above) but it does not show on display captures. The pictures below were all taken by the microscope. They are all at the lowest magnification (you can see the highest magnification on the screen in the photo above). I'm very happy with the quality (both picture capture and the actual display screen).

Video can be captured at resolutions 720, 1080 and 1080HD and you can also capture audio as you film ... so if you're into doing YouTube presentations (attention Gormo) this device would allow really detailed presentations.

You can also rotate the display, change it to black and white or negative (see below). For some reason I couldn't capture images in black & white or negative ... unless I have missed something. The pic below is a photo of the screen in negative (the actual display looks much better).

Bottom line ... I'm very happy with it so far. I have some detailed painting to do on some of my 3D models which should confirm that I have bought a useful tool.

There are some versions of these microscopes up to 1200X magnification. I think for HO/OO/O scale modeling 200X is about right.

    1200X
would be just too close ... unless you're a rivet counter.

Chris's is £129. Is that good.

EDIT: Just done a conversion and Chris's is a real bargain. Equivalent to about £86. Nice one

    G`day Chris,
Yes that is quite impressive and a reasonable price.
As you say, you would get used to watching the screen as you worked...........I have found the same thing with a magnifying head visor........once you get used to it the brain has worked it all out for you.
The image with the biro in it is beautifully sharp and clear......lots of potential there.......thanks for sharing.
