This is structure 22 on the sitemap. https://platform1mrc.com/p1mrc/index.php?threads/cement-works-10-site-map-explained.5333/ Provides the coaling and watering facility for the works shunter "Westminster". Constructed from scratch using craft matchsticks to create a typical structure made up of old sleepers in a very simple fashion. The finished assembly was then given a rough colouring of weathered sleeper and sooty black, then a mound was created by laying thin flexible plastic packing foam over some crumpled tissue. This was painted satin black and coated with diluted PVA and scattered over with Woodland Scenics Coal Run coal and further coated with diluted PVA in track ballast approach. Once dry some Peco coal dust was added with the aid of isopropyl alcohol to complete the dirtiness of it all. The water crane is a modified cheapo Hornby one with the base mounting column reduced in height and brass tube added to the bottom of the vertical pipe. The base mounting column was then re-drilled to take this larger diameter pipe and provides a rigid mounting instead of the original broomstick in a dustbin grade of sloppy fit. The base was repainted along with the lower part of the column. A water tower is not required as the site has a good supply laid on and the yard engine is small. The arm counterbalance weight is made from a rubber blanking plug, drilled and pushed onto some plastic rod which is glued into the top of the crane. The hose is a piece of black heat shrink sleeving which just pushed onto the spout replacing the gaudy red original. The result is as shown :- Concluding the Cement Works Build Except for adding the pipe work and hoses to unload gypsum from PRESFLO wagons at (24) that just about finishes the first pass of construction of the cement works. I was going to add an extra coal store (19) but I feel it will overcrowd the scene, the coal store in (20) should cope with intermittent supply issues from the colliery. When I eventually finish the first pass of the whole layout I will add further detail, who am I kidding! Further updates or changes will posted as and when they happen. Next, I will start a tour around the marshalling yard, "Warren Yard", it's purpose, operation and ancillary services. Jim Return to index of articles.
