I was recently commissioned for a new 4mm scale signal box, but it was something different to my usual NSR lines, and this was to be a GWR Type 28B box, all timber and only 2 sided roof.

here are some early renders so far.. it’s still a work in progress before we look to print it.

The last shot is the locking room. The customer will arrange there own interior..

however, another new thing for me is the internal stairs!

    regards

click to open in current browser. Should take you to a 3D navigable model..

If it doesn’t work, here are a few model photos. Printing should begin next week.
I’ve refined the windows. Added the roof vents (not sure how close they are?) and added a simple name board. This will be tweaked on version 2. Also added since the last post is the small window to the rear of the box.

It was all looking so well..

    6E54F463-C3AD-4620-985B-B41D541BC43C.jpeg

I was pretty pleased with this (first full depth box all timber, all my previous boxes had been two halves with a brick lower half)

Even happy with the very fine name plate!

    but alas…

it appears that the back bit failed right from the word go on the supports and progressed from there.

    oh well, we’ll try again.

Looks like it will be spot on once you get it supported and oriented in the best way. I would possibly keep the internals separate and glue after painting

    Hi John,
No it turned out to be a puncture in the fep.

3D printing is a fickle business isn't it, having been at it 18 months I have come to realise even a superb print doesn't mean a second print is anywhere near as good, why, just far to many variables to take into account. after the P6 that Rob has just posted a print of, I ran a second print, nothing changed, same resin, same chitu file same day, little change in the weather. Result in the bin, failure from pretty low down with no discernible reason. Better luck next time, the basic print looks great.

Strange I had a print fail today which also resulted in a damaged fep. Lucky I had a screen protector also fitted so no damage to the screen. The feps I buy come with a extra film on them I now uses them as screen protectors now. I did loose a screen a few months back wow that hurt.

I am using a Anycubic Photon Mono x which seems to be ok not sure I needed to go so big at the time but it seemed like a good idea at the time. The screen replacement was £129 which was a hard lesson to learn. I think the last fail of the FEP was due to a small fragment from a OO gauge figure I had printed then getting pushed through the FEP. It must have been floating in the resin. As I had checked with a small playing card before printing to see if anything was stuck to the FEP.

    John,

I think we have all been there and got that very expensive tick. It's a very harsh lesson to learn.

Andy I have both a Mono X and a Mono. I asked Paul for advice what to get, he recommended the X, I bought the Mono, oops. I very quickly realised how restricting it is so put my hands in my pocket and went for an X as well. The mono is good for small jobs, but I'd rather have 2 X's.

What resins are you guys using? I am now using the Anycubic clear water wash resin and very pleased with that. So much easier to clean up afterwards.

    John,

I was originally using Anycubic standard resin, but now use craftsman and I'm getting super results from it. Have a look at posting 55 on the Spring time printing time thread - that's my NER P6 hopper.

I’ve tried the water one. Didn’t notice and difference other than price. Stuck to the Anycubic grey. Have some of that green in stock as emergency but can find some parts are brittle once cured.

I must admit the water wash when I bought it was at a good price and the fact I do not then need to use IPA to clean them made me stick with it. If the price difference become to mush I may start looking at other options.

What software are you designing in?

    Andy,

My first batch of resin was Anycubic basic black, which like your green seemed a bit brittle and weirdly to a degree it was also translucent.

John I use Fusion 360 as does Paul Lancaster and Rob Pulham, although I think Rob still uses his old software as well (123 I think), not sure what Andy uses but I know he has been dabbling with 360 recently.

Im still drawing on 123design as still comfy with that. Renders are done in fusion..

Paul uses 123d and Fusion not sure if Rob does? Thought he was just Fusion?
