The Mono X has just come back from being fixed and needs a test, it sounds like I need to get it warmed up!

Oh yes, the drawing is complete, it just needs final fitting to the footplate. It has been suggested that I look at the firebox extensions that fit under the footplate too as among other things, the boiler bands don't match up with those above the footplate.

I am not sure that you will need the Mono X though it's only 85mm long by 50mm high

It does look quite simple now that it's finished but I have had to learn quite a few new, to me, drawing techniques to get all the details onto the complex shape.

It's more than 20mm high that's what matters the fault kick in at rough 20mm and clears about 30mm from the build plate. The bods at Anycubic claimed it was a failure with the mono plate, so I sent them videos of all 3 tests that the printer comes with. They then declared the mono was fine it must be the stepping motor or shaft that was at fault and ordered me a new on, 6 weeks later it was finally delivered along with some horrible looking instructions so it went to a PC engineer down the road who said he would give it a go for £40 which didn't seem unreasonable. A week later I got a call saying it was ready and when I picked it up it turned out the 1 hour he estimated turned into 3+ and 3 strip downs and rebuilds, but he declared that his under estimate and stuck with the £40. In these days pretty good I reckon. All up this has been going on for nearly 3 months.

There were a few things I could use to test it with but assumed your firebox might be coming so held off till now.

Fingers crossed it will be heading your way later today.

Just send it over when your ready Rob, and don't do what I have just done. I decide to map out the Westie pipe work from the drivers valence to the buffers. Front end done, rear end 2/3rds done when one of those oh god moments. It all looked very neat and tidy except the &*^%$ frames were in the way, after calming down I had very nasty job of deleting it all and am about now ready to restart!

Fingers crossed for the Mono X first print(s).

I did a test yesterday printing number plates at 0.02 layer height

    I'm impressed

    upload_2022-12-20_12-22-25.png

Had to rub a bit of dust onto the plate, but under a magnifying glass all writing is clearly printed.

    upload_2022-12-20_12-21-16.png

I found a post on tinternet for a rough exposure calculator.

    0.02 is 60% of 0.05
    1-(0.02/0.05) * 100 = 60

    Half the percentage = 30
    Subtract from 100 = 70
    Divide by 100 = 0.7

    Current exposure time * 0.7
    Mono X (Printer No 2) exposure for 0.05 layer + 2.4s

    2.4 * 0.7 = 1.68s

    Rounded up to 1.7s

Test print above (I left the base layers as normal) came out lovely - pics don't show them at thier best.

It was kindly pointed out over on Western Thunder that the rear washout plug on the right hand side was obscured by the boiler band. A detail that I had missed.
Domestic stuff got in the way yesterday so I have only just had time to look at it.

I still need to do the check and correct against the footplate, next job hopefully.

I had made the amendments to make it fit to the footplate and sent off an stl file to Mossy when someone on the GOG forum mentioned the front corners of the firebox. Initially I had planned to leave them as they were but the same gent popped up a really clear photo of the firebox corners so I revisited them this morning.

    Rob,

Are you sending over the .stl or hanging fire till you have drawn the bottom section?

I will send them together unless you would prefer one beforehand?

Doesn't really matter which, I intend printing them both in a single run so it's probably better to wait till both are ready.

I have been working away at the ashpan sections during odd half hours where it wasn't worth getting into any physical modelling. I am almost there with it now, I just need to thicken up the top at bottom at the rear to make it match the DA castings.

The clamp on the bottom curve is very much a representation as I didn't think anything finer would print successfully and if it did it would probably get knocked off during fitting.

Do these need printing with the top section or as separate bodies?

Separate bodies, these two (it will be mirrored when I have finished the design work) fit under the footplate with the upper firebox on top of the footplate.

Nearly there, I just need to see if I can workout where the screws will fit. then they are done.

The firebox prints arrived today and I have to say that they have printed really well. Sadly somewhere along the line I made an error with the height and they are too tall so some revision of the drawings is in order.

Do bear in mind that these photos are greatly enlarged.

Seeing them blown up that big I don't like those grooves on either side, I didn't spot them after printing. They were printed at 90 degrees to the build plate so any print graining I would have expected to run vertically not horizontally. When you figure out what needs doing I will reprint them angled to try get rid of those. Amateur pride is at stake, most of the rest is just rubbish from a cursory clean up, I left most of that for you to do.

The MK II firebox is slowly coming together. I have taken the opportunity to do things in a different order making for a more efficient drawing. I also took the opportunity to make the washout plugs look a bit more randomly screwed in.

Still some way to go though.

Random wash outs tut tut, I bet it is was an NER loco, all the washout plugs would be neatly aligned when fully screwed in, fussy ^%&&$$ in the 19th century and plenty of cheap labour.

When I worked for the GPO Telephones all screws had to have their slots vertical.
