I have been wondering about this direction for a while now and decided that, yes, it will happen. We had the pleasure of this great locomotive in Australia for our bicentenary so the era just squeaks into my Dargan layout. I have all the coaches in my collection that the Scotsman hauled on some of its NSW journeys so now it needs to arrive. It will be separated from the coaches by the mandatory bogie water gin so the clash of HO/OO is not on my list of issues. But I am a bit confused by the various offerings. So all you UK members, I would appreciate your views on just what Flying Scotsman I should purchase.

Naturally it must be DCC with sound (I have an NCE system) and I am not interested in the less than top quality products and must have 5 pole skew wound mechanisms. Kadees will be fitted to the tender.

So over to you kind residents of the UK....what should it be?...and from where should it be acquired.

    Cheers

    and happy modelling

    Richard

PS I hope this does not incite any patriotic beliefs that members may hold of their views of the different producers, but if so I suppose it will aid my final decision.

When I saw the thread title of "The Flying Scotsman in Oz", I felt I had to post a photo of the painting above my computer:

    P1010971.jpg

Painted by my late father in 1996, it was one of the last pictures he painted and, as by that time he was developing a shaky hand, some of the finer detail isn't quite up to the standard set by his earlier paintings, nevertheless it has pride of place in my study. He trained at the Dundee College of Art in the 1940s (his studies were interrupted early on by service with the RAF in WWII) and he became a secondary school art teacher, first in Scotland and then, from 1958 until retirement in 1982 in New South Wales. He was also a life member of the Ku-ring-gai Art Society.

Yes. I have nine of his paintings, seven of them being ones of trains. Most of his paintings were either of trains or bushland scenes. Perhaps I should photograph all the ones I have and put them in a thread here, when I have a bit of time to spare.

As for a model of the Flying Scotsman, it's a pity that it falls outside your requirements as far as current standards are concerned, but the two rail Trix Flying Scotsman was in H0 scale (or, as with a lot of Trix products, more like a hybrid 00/H0 scale that was more H0 than 00). A good model in its day, but not when you compare it to present day offerings.

The latest models from Hornby in OO are good, with 5-pole motors and loco drive. Many years ago there was a brass HO model available, but I don't think you'll find one of those nowadays. As you say, a degree of separation with the gin in the train might let you mix OO and HO without it being too obvious. I mix trains of HO and OO scales, but not usually in the same train - photo to illustrate a couple side by side: the Danish unit should be much bigger in comparison to the 08 shunter, but they actually look OK side by side.

There was a proper HO scale brass model of the Flying Scotsman available a little while back. If I remember correctly, one of the members of the Epping Model Railway Club owns one. It was manufactured by PSM (Precision Scale Models), Samhongsa, Korea. I have been told there is one available from Joe at Casula Hobbies.., of course for a hefty price tag of $3000.00....

Hattons are currently taking pre-orders for the new tooling Scotsman, although not in Apple Green livery : https://www.hattons.co.uk/619212/ho...th_early_emblem_due_sep_21_2/stockdetail.aspx

Although there is a Hornby Railroad version with TTS sound available from Hattons, although this has the older round steam dome : https://www.hattons.co.uk/69520/hor...tts_sound_fitted_railroad_ra/stockdetail.aspx

Or for $235.00 a standard Railroad version is available from Hobbyco...

    Cheers, Gary.

    Thanks Guys.

Amazingly I have found one of the sold out models, DCC ready and with the required 5 pole skew wound motor and proper detailing right here in OZ. Problem solved.

    Thanks for your help.

Now you just have to get yourself a model of Pendenis Castle to recreate the gathering in WA.

I hadn’t realised how old the thread was when first reading.
Did you get the Scotsman model? And if so, which one?
