It's International Women's Day and I've had the real pleasure to talk to some incredible women all over the world involved in the model railway hobby and industry - video coming soon.
Hello All, let us not forget Vivian Thompson's LBSCR Eastbourne and BR SR Eridge, both 00 gauge 4mm scale, and the PECO book "Period Railway Modelling" which, despite its dated style (and for PECO, a terrible book design akin to a 1920s school text book) is an amazing book, that is often overlooked. Then there is Doris Stokes, whose landscape work enhanced G.Illiffe Stokes's buildings, which he acknowledges. Over the years many RM layouts scenery was the wife's contribution, and many exhibitions has the wife/partner being one of the operators. So sometimes we miss, or overlook, their valuable contribution. From my perspective, I am interested in the modeller's work, their gender is irrelevant, all good models encourages others to participate, and give it a go. Then there is Jennifer Kirk's YouTube channel! Regards to all, Echidna.
I would also like to nominate all the long suffering other halves whatever the gender, that put up with us modellers - thank you Also inspirational for me was Bev Lowrey's layout Bevette, I saw the layout at one of the few AMRS Model Rail exhibitions in Edinburgh, the layout was small extremely well made detailed and ran beautifully. There's a growing number of women getting interested in model railways - but women in the hobby are still in the minority. I wanted to find out what's stopping women getting more involved in railway modelling and spoke to some amazing women in both the hobby and industry, including the executive director of the most famous model railroad museum in the US, and the woman behind Bachmann's fabulous LNER Thompson Teaks. A huge thank you to: Michelle Kempema: Executive Director of the Colorado Model Railroad Museum Lucy Dormont, Social media and marketing manager for the National Model Railroading Association. Louise Oliver, Graphic designer at Bachmann Europe Railway modellers par excellence: Maggie Gravett, Gilly North, Carol Flavin and Rachel Harris And to Zara and Kath - an inspiration to young women railway modellers everywhere.
And don't forget the ifya canya heroines i.e. Darling ifya going past such and such a shop canya pick up some pva (or whatever) Ian vt
I feel that a lot of female 'other halves' are heavily involved in railway modelling, but are not recognised for it. So the man lays the track and runs the trains, and the woman 'just' does the landscaping and makes the the trees and the buildings and the figures.
The 'just' is what it seems to pass as, but in my book the scenery makes or breaks the atmospheric feel of a model railway Jim
