A TYCO HO BURLINGTON NORTHERN 50ft BOXCAR was purchased on EBay by mistake, it was meant to be N gauge, so I decided it could become the subject of the ‘wrangle.’

After spending quite some time on the web looking at photos and videos for ideas of what it should look like, I think I am ready, so here goes:

Some of the items I thought I might need!

Weathering powder. Humbrol Iron Oxide Smoke and Dark Earth.

    Chalk. White and Coloured.

    Sand Paper.

    Testors Dullcote Spray.

    Selection of brushes.

    Tooth brush.

    Cotton buds.

    Gell Pens.

    Hair dryer.

    Water.

    1. I started by removing the body from the chassis.

    2. After inspecting both parts I decided that they needed a cleaning, so I mixed a 1% soap solution and gave them a scrub with toothbrush and cotton buds and then a rinse with some water.
    3. Dry thoroughly with hair dryer.
    4. Next give a light spray with the Dullcote to create a base for the powders.
    5. Use a hair dryer to dry.

    6. Create some white powder by rubbing white chalk on sandpaper.

    7. Brush boxcar with white powder to soften colour.

    8. Selectively apply the Dark Earth weathering powder with a brush.
    9. Give a light spray with the Dullcote to protect the surface from finger smudges and dry.
    10. Selectively dust with some Iron Oxide powder to simulate rust areas and also apply some Smoke to create a grime effect.
    11. With a fine brush moistened with water create some downward strokes to create rain streaks in the grime.
    12. Brush some Iron Oxide selectively on the roof, soften effect as required.
    13. Another light spray of Dullcote and dry.
    14. Brush a mix of Smoke and Dark Earth on ends of wagon, roof and bottom edges of the boxcar.
    15. Another light spray of Dullcote.

    16. Spray under chassis and bogies with Dullcote and dry.

    17. Mix Iron Oxide, Dark Earth and Smoke with a small amount of water and apply to bottom of chassis and bogies and dry.

    18. Selectively add some Iron Oxide for rust effect.

    19. Assemble body and chassis.

    20. Light Dullcote spray all over and dry

    21. Clean wheel surfaces as required.

Nice approach to weathering and a good how to.

I use a similar method but apply Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) between the layers of powder with an airbrush. The IPA softens the matt coat (Dullcote or similar) and binds the powders in. ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

Practice makes perfect, and boy, haven't I got some practicing to do. I'm a long way off some of the models I see in magazines, on you tube etc..., but I'm still learning techniques on how to improve. ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

ps, my latest weathering attempt : http://www.platform1mrc.com/view_post.php?post_id=27676

Nice one Ron - shows how with a few easily obtainable items what a difference can be made to an out of the box item.

    22. Use the Gell Pens to create some graffiti on the sides of the boxcar.
