Sorry I've not been able to do this as one post. Can't seem to get the 'share from gallery' thingy to work. First and random coat of rusty colours. I used Halfords red oxide undercoat plus splodges of railmatch dark rust and humbrol orange. It really doesn't matter if you use enamel or acrylic for this. Attached files
Next, a liberal spray of hairspray and a sprinkling of salt. You will need more salt than you think. The purple splotches on the left are Maskol. I was running a comparison. It doesn't work very well. Attached files
Top coat. I used a rattle can of boring grey. Acrylic gives more control over the final effect. You have to spray this, it can't be brush painted. Attached files
Finally the salt is washed off with water and a cotton bud. Using a toothbrush would remove more of the salt but risks removing more paint too. Attached files
Hi Terry, after you first posted this method up I had a play doing the low relief warehouse building on my layout, worked very well. Thanks for posting up a great how to, I'm sure plenty of others will give this method a go. http://www.clickKim
Glad to be of help Kimbo. I'm sure we'd like to see your warehouse. I'm planning to use the technique for a few 16 and 20 ton coal wagons and hoppers.
Hello Terry great post. it's a simple but very effective way to produce a random rust effect. Not tried it yet but I'll be having a go with a wagon and on a piece of corrugated sheet. it got me thinking about the process and I'm going to try just rubbing of the hair-sprayed salt with a soft-ish nail brush and not use any water in an attempt to control a messy damp area. Have you tried that way with out using water? Thanks again.
I tried this method on a wagon, but sprayed the wagon with hairspray then added salt then added the rust colour. I rubbed the salt off instead of washing it off.
