OK I have never done this before but this is one of my layouts. It is a model of a semifictitious station on the Tollesbury light railway. In my world LNER upgraded it to a proper branch line whereas the original was built as a light railway. Tolleshunt is now the terminus of the railway and the line continues past the station a little. In fact the line was shortened to the jam factory at Tiptree a few miles up. I used to go there to pick strawberries at one time in my life. Then it was the premier strawberry growing area in England. More of this later.
Here the J15 waits to take the train back to Kelvedon on the main line. There is a horse box at the rear.

A close up of the bus. I worked on the buses in Essex. The driver and his better half are having a chat with the conductor who is leaning on the bus holding his mug of tea. Life was a little less hurried in those times, if the bus was not scheduled to leave for half an hour then you got to drink tea and hang out.

Fantastic little cameo shot. You should submit that into our competition. It finishes the end of this month and there are some great prizes to be won. Not to mention a slot on picture of the week for the winner.:avatar:

    Great work.

    Cheers

The fires OK, pressure is up, not that they would need much for the trundle up to Kelvedon and the crew sit down for a serious talk about whether Colchester Utd will avoid relegation from league division 3

Thanks Kim and Andrew, I have a bit of a "thing" about the GE, I didn't want to say anything yet as it may not come to anything, but I have made a VERY early start on building a Great Eastern branch terminus, one base board made and a start on one of the buildings, the engine shed, how long it will take is anyones guess, as I don't have much room to work, so as "they" say, watch this space.
Sorry for highjacking your thread Andrew!! :whatever:.

    Cheer's, Pete.

This is one of the bits of the layout I am less happy with. For a start the ratio gates don't reach across the double track and are therefore incorrect. If I exhibit it again I'd like to fix that. Can anyone point me to wider ones?
Secondly I am told level crossings don't go across points. I am sure that is true as a general rule but it does not cross where the point blades are, just the crossover. I originally built the layout with some lovely marcway 00 track and points but it was a disaster for running. I think every time the back of the flange touched the point blade there was a short and the loco stopped. This might be OK on DC but not DCC. So, I had to reluctantly rip it out and replace it with some lovely HO track from a well known purveyor. That moved the points to the middle of the level crossing but by then it was too late.
Lastly the ghastly paint smudge on the road does not look too bad in real life even under bright lights but the camera is cruel. I am realising that layouts built for photography might be quite different from layouts built for serviceability!
    All comments welcome.
    RegardsAndrew

Very true about the camera being cruel Andrew, but it can be helpful to pick up things you haven't noticed with the mark one eyeball !!
Are the crossing gates 'active' or are they shut all the time, if they are working I see your point but otherwise they look good as they are!!
    Cheers

    Hi Andrew

Loving the thread, for the gate, how about make a slightly lager red disk, and thicken the gate frame with thin strips of plasticard.

I'm sure a read a thread on RMweb (I think) about level crossings over point work, and do you think I can find it :(

I think there were prototypical pictures similar to what you've already done Andrew, but just invoke Rule 1 if anyone queries it.

Paul's solution to the gate gap sound good.

Toto...I think they just avoided it, 18/20 !

Ron... Yes i will start to use my iphone and play it back on my big computer screen. I know I have some hovercraft buildings on my other layout; its surprising how often these turn up even in high quality masgazine shots.

Paul.. I am actually not to worried about the gaps as gates were often quite decrepit by the end of BR. Its just that its wrong and I know it.

Ed.. yes I have seen such crossings I am sure, possibly in Australia. And as for round docks, streets and railways mixed indiscriminately.
