G`day Folks,

I was fortunate enough to be able to get to the model railway exhibition at Liverpool just a couple of days ago, and as always I was on the lookout for any bargains.

I managed to catch up with Gary and his boys and Chris before I went on my pilgrimage looking for that elusive find.

Anyway, call me a cheapskate, but a lot of the second hand stuff is vastly overpriced. One trader had packaged a large quantity of various coaches and had them at $30.00 a piece. Not too bad you might say, but in my estimation, they were worth a good deal less than that. Anyway, that`s par for the course at exhibitions, although the couple of times I`ve been to the Thornleigh exhibition, I have found their second hand stall quite reasonable with a good range of stuff.

Eventually, I happened upon a couple of Mainline wagons that I felt would scrub up rather well. At $5.00 for a van and $10.00 for a tanker, I thought that was down right cheap considering they had all their bits and pieces intact. They just needed a bit of a clean and I was away.

The van is the subject of this weeks Gormo`s Shed. I have changed the couplings and weathered it a bit and then set it free on my railway..........Enjoy..!!!!!....

That wagon has 'scrubbed up well' Gormo

There seems to be a general opinion that metal wheels don't spread dirt around the track as much as plastic. Don't know if that is exactly true, but I have changed all mine to metal.

Even with the cost of new couplings maybe wheels and a bit of weathering powder, still a lot cheaper then a new wagon, especially if your trying to make up fairly long rakes.

Yes that`s true about the wheels, however the Mainline wheels do track nicely and derailments are rare, especially on older track where the new metals wheels with smaller flanges, tend to drop into the frogs.......it`s a battle with cleanliness versus reliability unless you go out and buy everything new.

Hi Gormo. I like the van. Especially the sliding doors. It's came up well and runs well too. I had to watch the video muted as I'm in my kip and SWMBO is about sleeping. Dare not keep her awake.

I'll watch again with surround sound tomorrow

Hi Gormo

Really liked the wagon but the show was just a few days ago so you surely can get things done quickly. I am still struggling with weathering my NSW W44 sulphide wagons.

Thanks Toto & Davo,

Davo......Gary did some great tutorials on weathering if you need any info. I don`t necessarily work fast....the method is just easy....that`s all.

Thanks again guys. Was wrapped in all the videos so went shopping yesterday and bought all of the necessary items. A few tentative steps and then went straight into the fray and have had a great afternoon weathering. My S truck coalies look terrific. They already had a base coat so it was just really finessing the final product. So now the W 44 sulphides have all been given their base coats and I will continue tomorrow....

I thought it was worth my first attempt at inserting a photo so here it goes. Now will have to find out how to jump past the photo to start putting in text for the next photo as I will need to do this when posting my layout. Anyway I am happy with my S truck coalies

Yes it is certainly catching. I am preparing a post of my layout and this should be up in about a week or so. Main problem is my very sophisticated Cannon digital slr which does not seem to like close ups. I have an expert on the way to bail me out.

G`day Richard,

If you have a very sophisticated Canon digital, there is a good chance that it has a MACRO setting which would allow you to do extreme close ups. It could possibly be a button with a flower symbol on it.???

Very good attempt on weathering. I'm surprised that it's your first go. It looks like the work of an old hand. Very impressive.
