Started separating the main sides from the sprue and folding the top and bottom edges through 90 degrees ..... just as the destructions tell me too.

next is cutting out the docket overlays ready for soldering in place .......

this is nearly getting exciting ........
    cheers

Painfully slow. I made a bit of a mess with the first soldering piece so had to take it off and redo it. it will take me a couple of attempts to get back into it.

Still a little bit on the surface to come back off but getting there.

believe it or not, its not as bad as it looks here. Onwards anyway.
    cheers

    Hi Sparky,
I have been trying to but the dockets needed a bit work from the front to tidy some gaps. thats when the mess started.
You'll see the two ton of solder I had to use just to get the handrails to take in this next image.

I'll have to try and tidy that up as well.

Soldering the end walls in place was much easier. A bit flux, cut a short length of solder and lay it along the join, add one hot iron and whoosh ....... along the solder went. far more successful.
I can see a few kits getting ruined I think but I'll persevere. Practice makes almost perfect ...... decent would do. :avatar:
    cheers

A bit clumsy with the smaller pieces Ian. I think I'm going to try a 25watt iron with a smaller tip for the fine bits and keep the bigger iron for the larger joints. Can only try.

    Cheers

And if the solder fails you can always use rivets ...

Rivets + the dreaded HAMMER ...... that should scare the kit into submission

Remember the solder is softer than the brass, so the glass fibre brush can also be useful to clear off the solder.

    Nice result so far

Watching this closely as I have one in the cupboard cowering in the corner.

    Nice start Toto
You have done the hardest part “Made a start”
Remember flux is your friend and give it a good wash after each session of soldering just to neutralise the flux from doing any corrosive damage to the brass.

    Look8ng good so far

    Hi Tom,
That's the worst thing you can do, the smaller iron won't have enough heat to transfer it to the big part that you are soldering the small part to - you need heat in them both for the solder to stick.
I would suggest try using a small sliver cut from the solder with a scalpel. The less solder you use, the less there can be to clean up.

    Thanks Rob,

I'll heed you advice. I must admit, when I was doing the big joins on the inside of the carriage corners, I cut off small sections of solder and placed it along the fluxes join, applied the iron and away it went.

For the smaller pieces, I take it you just flux both surfaces, pop a very small sliver of solder between the two surfaces and apply heat to the top surface. The iron should only be applied for a second or so then lift it off ?

For applying the door handles and grab rails, it looks like the holes will need bored out a bit to take the thin rail / rod. I am assuming a pin vice should be used as opposed to a Dremmel ?

    Cheers

    Toto

    Cheers Paul.

I'm thinking, once the holes are bored out and handles bent to shape, dunk the handle ends in the flux, push into holes and apply a hot iron with a little solder to the rear of the hole. It should draw through. :scratchchin:

    Cheers.

I did not get back in the shed today. One or two domestic duties had to be attended to. I shall hopefully get back in tomorrow night and will be starting with the handles etc to the inner doors before the outside ends go in.

    Oh joy. :avatar:

As you've probably gathered, not progressed any further yet. Been a little crappy over the last couple of days. A chest cold I've not managed to shake off. I get this every year at the same time. I'll get back on the case before long. Just taking the opperchancity to read and re-read the destructions ahead of restarting again. Can't do that too often. Can only help familiarisation.

    I'll keep in touch.

better get better soon - otherwise the schnapps will only be for medicinal rather than recreational purposes, only a couple of week before Von Corbett is on his travels
