Has anyone got one of the resistance soldering stations from London Road Models ? if so ..... whats the verdict ? cheers toto
Video's on Youtube are impressive, but expensive. Being tight, I'm going to have a go at building my own .... but thats for another day. Paul
Just received an email from London Road Models saying their Roy's are back in stock and mines is on its way. I asked how many more they still have in stock as I know there may have been some folks interested. ........ I await their reply but suggest you don't hang around to place an order if you want one. Cheers Toto
For those interested here is the link London Road Models Resistance Soldering Iron Dear Santa, am I too late to change my letter Paul
RSU photo's as promised ...... first the destructions ..... also give you some pointers on use ....... The main unit itself which gives the possibility of various voltage settings depending on the combination used with the leads ..... the foot pedal which comes with a reasonably long connecting cable......... The positive probe into which the carbon rods / bits attach ........ then the copper coated carbon rods themselves .......... and the negative lead which plugs into the front of the unit and will get a crimp soldered onto the open end for connection to a grounding plate. and that as they say ........ is that. cheers for now. Toto
Was that you that took out the lights in Edinberg ...... Gatwick has drones, Scotland has Toto And you'll be testing it when ? Paul
I've sent away for some more spare copper coated carbon rods. i'll file some to a point and others to chisel tips. Only £1.50 for a 12" rod. pretty cheap I thought .
If my track record on soldering bits has any consistency about it ...... I'll need them. Not just that, there is a better chance I'll be able to find one when needed if I have more. I have too many safe places to store them.
Oh with that I sympathise entirely - I have 5 craft knives, three tape measures and countless cutting mats for that very reason - I can have two pairs of glasses stowed on my head and still lose half an hour wondering around aimlessly looking for a pair!!! I'm only surprised that you haven't considered a little TIG welding set... yet...
I'll come back with the rod sizes today Paul. I will be hitting the shed. I've decided to force myself in a bid to kick start the enthusiasm. I will also be looking at getting a ground plate sorted out. I gave a couple of victims I can use for this. One being a sheet of mild steel and the other being a sheet of brass albeit the latter is considerably smaller in size. Could be a trip to B & Q after mg domestic duties are complete. ( dog at vet and mother in law to shops ) I'll post up a couple of pictures of whatever comes of it ....... the shed that is, not the mother in law . I would also like to look at designing a simple jig for the construction of my M & M wagons floor chassis. If I manage that then I'll carry on with my recent wagon build that I started. I need to get something on the go or the holidays will be wasted. We can but try. Toto
If you go in with the intention of doing something, I'm sure the creative juices will soon flow. ( just don't get the ma in law shop's/vets mixed up or it won't just be the juices flowing! ) Pete.
Eventually got out into the shed tonight and started looking at the RSU. Started with the soldering rods ...... here is how they come ........ and after a bit of filing to get to a chisel point ...... The pencil point will need to wait as I cannae find a pencil sharpener ..... and here is the copper plate that I was going to use as a ground plate once mounted onto a bit of MDF ...... cheers toto
I also have this sheet metal that may be better as a ground plate. If soldering on top of the copper there could be a risk of soldering to the copper. Wont happen with the mild steel. However its how to get a mechanical connection from the ground lead to the mild steel. I am working on that one. cheers toto
