Apologies for the long title for this thread. I was challenged by someone who read my posts about the Bicester Military Railway and about MoD Kinston to look at the Nescliffe Camp.

I have started by looking at the feeder railway which was commandeered by the military and this has become a post in its own right. I will get round to the military areas in the next post in the series.

The next post in this series links the place I grew up during teenage years with the Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Light Railway. 'Gazelle' was made in King's Lynn and has had an interesting history!

The little line born from the incredibly rare example of a Pre Grouping company that was abandoned at birth!

Gazelle is known to have taken charge of two different coaches in its time on the Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Light Railway. The first was a cut down version of a London Horse Tram. The second used the same chassis with a body from a Wolseley-Siddeley Railcar which Colonel Stephens first used on the Selsey Tramway. That Railcar was itself a signioficantly modifies rail-lorry based on a Wolseley-Siddeley chassis........

Roger am I correct in thinking a small rake of ancient North Staffordshire Railway four wheelers went to the S&M during the 1920's ?

Thanks Roger, I once saw a photograph of two or three close coupled four wheelers of NSR origin lettered up in S&MR legend, these carriages having short buffers were ex Loop Line stock due to the very tight curvatures around Hanley station. The photo was published in a long out of print book by George Dow called North Staffordshire Railway Album.

I have just been reading through the book by PeterJohnson which says the following about coaching stock on the S&MLR:

"For passenger stock, the S&MLR initially had four ex-Midland Railway bogie carriages. ... All subsequent carriage acquisitions were four-wheeled, these being six ex-LSWR carriages obtained from the Plymouth, Devonport & South Western Junction Railway in 1911, and three North Staffordshire Railway carriages acquired c. 1916."
