Hello All, I was recently reading "Yeadon's LNER Locomotives Vol 25 N1 & N2 0-6-2T", where ( 17 ) locomotives received Westinghouse Air Brakes, Batch 4 Doncaster Wks, 892 - 897 / 9562 - 9567 ( 5 ) N2/3 non condensing, Westinghouse Air Brake for engine and train with vacuum ejector. Batch 2 NBL 4721 - 4770 / 9500 - 9549 ( 50 ) N2/1 Right Hand Drive, condensing, vacuum brake. (12) from sub Batch 4721 - 4740 / 9500 - 9519 went to Scotland and were fitted with Westinghouse air pumps for train braking, retained vacuum for locomotive braking, condensing gear removed, nos. 4721 - 4724, 4726, 4728, 4729, 4731, 4732, 4735, 4737, 4740 ( 12 ); 4722, 4723, 4726, 4737, 4740, returned to East London Stratford ( 5 ). The Scottish Constituents, GNoSR & NBR, as well as their southern neighbour, NER; were all Westinghouse Air Brake railways, and the remnants of those air braked trains lasted until 1952. ( Almost in time for air braked EMUs ! ) The question is - Where was the reserve air tank for the Westinghouse Air Brake system located ? Bear in mind that the Isle of Wright xLSWR 02 class 0-4-4T were also air braked, and the 02s carry the reservoir tank between the top of the left hand water tank ( looking forward ) and the boiler, and is therefor both prominent, and a distinctive definer of location. Regards, Echidna
The Westinghouse fitted N2's had the air tank fitted under the bunker between the radial wheels - Info gleaned from page 67 Part 9a Locomotives of the LNER by the RCTS. Regards Rob
Dear Bob, thanks for that.Doubtless the workshops had their reasons, but an air tank in such a tight location must have made the fitters job difficult if they needed to attend to adjacent bearings or other fittings, Best wishes and regards, Echidna
