Just a general interest question to satisfy my morbid curiosity but what factors would necessitate installing at 12:1 gearing ratio in an O Gauge loco and what are the advantages of such? Also what scale speeds on the flat could be attained by say a Warship class loco hauling a rake of 10 coaches with such a gear arrangement fitted? Thanks for any pointers and help from members. cheers Yorkie
From Tower Models site the following applies Model Number Length Rated Speed (r.p.m) 1824 24mm 9200 1833 33mm 8500 Based on the tyre size of dia 25mm (Class 26 / 27) giving an approx circumference of 80mm (78.55 actually) then at max speed of an 1833 motor distance traveled per min = 8500/12 x 80 = 56667 mm per min and for scale speed would be 56667 x 43.5 = 2465 m per min converts to 91mph (google was my friend on that one). Does that help o curious one Paul
thanks chaps... now that would be a sight for sore eyes in anyone's book watching an NBL class 22 do a scale speed of 91mph through the rhododendron bushes
