Oh no, I’ve bought an O gauge wagon.

Nice fine work you are doing there Andy. it does seem a shame the wagon was drawn up containing such flaws but maybe the designer was working without firstly undertaking thorough primary research thus wasn't able to snag his progress, such is the woes of us scratch builders who suffer from Political Accuracy Syndrome :avatar: in instances like this. Most folk wouldn't even notice so I guess a line has to be drawn somewhere.

    This is true.

I’m wondering if I politely point out the mistake(s) to amend his files for any future customers, or just keep quiet. I’ve paid for mine now so bit late.

Hmm not sure, he could say you get what you pay for or he could take it on board and either amend files or otherwise, either way I wouldn't purchase any more if accuracy of detail is the name of the game. Why don't you draw up your own version of a PAA after all the big advantage you have is having access to one?

Going bigger meant I needed more “detail” in the transferring. I’ve been slowly researching the livery(ies) of the wagons with the help of Paul Bartlett who has contributed some high res pictures for some of the fine detail.

I’ve been drawing up new artwork for making new transfers from the artwork and measuring the model. A92D0903-92B8-4359-9F45-6079D4D52AA9.jpeg
As with any model, there is always a variation and changes as different times in its history. We can only find one photo of our real wagon in this livery, sadly it’s as it was built as a single door wagon, so picking what details we want for the dual door is hard. It could even be when it was converted it was in plain white as the fakes ran for a number of years until refurbishment in the WBB Minerals blue and white livery, I simply cannot confirm.

Anyway, the pipe work has been done at one end, and the livery racked on for checking visually

We will now move on to the chassis transfers as there are a number of wording/letterings around here including stars for the air string locations and possibly a builders plate to draw up.

Hopefully I can look at starting to paint the chassis black towards the end of the weekend. (Wedding to go to on Saturday)

So following the “masking” thread, I gave up... so started to brush paint the chassis.

There will be a long way to go, so will do it in sections.

Here is the first side, and one end.

As can be seen, there is a lot to “Black” - like all the white!

Well, that’s most of the black out the way. Silver buffers done. Just yellow and touch up whites and then transfers

Not entirely obvious, but we’re now on wheels.
Few small bits of painting to do, then on to the transfers.

I need to look at making a display diorama, but sure it will be no where near as good as Paul’s!

Working on the artwork... ready to laser print to transfer sheeting. Then give it a coat of varnish... then it’s fit it! Obviously this is just one side of the wagon.

Great artwork you have there Andy and the PAA is looking really good now you put your mark on it.:tophat::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: I still think you need a pair of 20's tho. Seriously I seem to remember in the last few months of sand working as the PAA rake became less... down to 12 wagons at times ... one of the regular performers on 9 Trip was a grey painted 20 with a red chassis and a large red and white Railfreight sticker on the cab side. I think (but not at all sure it was 20308 but it had a Toton depot marking.:scratchchin::thumbs:

    Quite possible..

Sadly a 20 will be a bit of a waste on just one wagon..

Well, the transfer sheet was printed on Friday and is ready to go.

Just tonight’s night shift and rest days beckon - although it’s the father in laws 60th tomorrow, I may look at doing the first wagon tomorrow night! Gulp! Yes and the eagle eyed may notice a 1:18th number plate and also an N gauge version of the livery.

So the 1:18th car came out OK.

    B17D9ED2-1F04-428D-BE80-864E3054BFF8.jpeg

The N gauge wagon (posted elsewhere) also came out OK...

    6FC078FA-EE3D-4796-B433-B08E60521A35.jpeg

Came to the O gauge model (and you’d think being bigger would help!!) two transfers failed.
I’ve also noticed the black print tends to rub off easier. I’m wondering if I need to varnish the transfer sheet before it goes on next time. So as I’ve only done one side, the other transfers for the reverse will be treated to a coat of Humbrol Gloss coat. Not only did they scratch but they tended to fall apart at the edges when trimmed with the scissors. With it being white on black I had to used the white backed decal paper and print the black surround. Not so much of an issue as much is replicating a sticker so didn’t matter if there was an edge. At the moment they simply look worn (as if been in the washer system a few times) if I have success with the varnish I’ll reprint some new ones.

Half way through the big wagon. Chassis done and the lower body.
    231B8B77-9931-4CF3-B984-E136687163D1.jpeg
    Complete.

For a first go in O gauge with a 3D printed kit, I’m quite pleased. May need to add a little weight but it’s actually about the same as a similar model kit or RTR wagon... the test will be on a layout one day.

Still need to secure the couplings. I would like them to be sprung but... I picked the Peco instanter which comes with a short lead. As it has to stand slightly proud of the buffer beam, there is little to no room left to make it sprung, which ideally if it ever ran on a layout it would really need to do.

    Any suggestions?

Also have the air pipe to fit... and two more to build.

Only advice I can offer you Andy is don't pick couplings with short necks, you will have to change for something else which accommodates a spring, Peco couplings are designed to fit with a length of piano wire held at the ends against the buffer shanks... an out with the ark way of doing things by today's methods. Then again the 3D printed body / chassis may need filing thinner at the headstocks to overcome this incompatibility.
