No worries mate, as no loco will be going that close to the buffer stop I will leave a gap or fit insulating joiners.

Back to the brake van build.
I have got the step boards glued on and the handrails, lamp brackets etc fitted.


Next job was painting the underframe and sole bars etc, now that was a PITA!! But hopefully it don't look to bad. I've used Humbrol "Dirty Black", acrylic, its like painting with pitch!


I shall leave it for now to dry, then check if I have missed any bits. If I build another, I will paint it as I build it, it may be sooner than I expect as I have seen one on evil bay, just waiting for a reply from the vendor to see if it comes with wheels as I didn't see any in the photos.

While at Guildex the Gauge O Guild show in Telford a few weeks back I bought a kit built 16 ton mineral wagon. The body had been painted a dark grey colour, much to dark so I am going to repaint it but before I do I'm going to start the rusty weathering process. This is it top centre.


I have removed the home made auto couplings as I don't need them and have splattered some rusty brown splodges on.





Once these have dried I'm going to cover the patches with Humbrol Maskol before masking the lower part of the wagon and spraying it grey auto undercoat. But that is for next time.

I have given both the brake and the 16 tonner a few licks of paint, the wagon 3 coats and the brake 2. I didn't think the grey primer I was going to use was light enough so I have brush painted them both, now I reckon the paint is a bit too light but once weathered up they shouldn't look too bad.

Now somewhere I have some decals for the wagon but can I find them????? I want to put them on before pulling of the maskol and weathering it up.
The brake still needs some paint and glazing plus couplings etc. A few more days and they should be ready for the track!

I have found the decals for the 16 tonner, so no excuses for not finishing it . However, I just wanted to mention the Slaters brake van I've been bidding on, on ebay. Well I won it, as the only bidder at the princely sum of £27 (plus p&p) it looks a bargain. I've also won an O gauge Lima 040 diesel shunter, the same model as I already have. I intend to anglicise it too but in BR green, to that end I have ordered a motor upgrade and Lais dcc chip. Hopefully they should arrive in the next week or so, photos to follow.

My last 2 ebay wins arrived this afternoon, the Lima shunter and what I thought was an LNER brake van kit but actually turned out to be an LMS brake instead . Not a problem, it will still be a very useful addition to the fleet.

After painting the 16 tonner and brake van in grey I took a second look and decided I didn't like the shade of grey, far too light so I sent for some Rail match British rail freight grey, much better! I've put the decals on the 16 tonner and gave them a coat of Humbrol matt varnish, I started pulling off the Maskol but need to let the varnish dry fully before continuing.



Coming along now, I will leave it a couple of days or so before picking the rest of the Maskol off then whack some muck and rust on!
