Last week I took a trip to Richard Arkwrights Mill in Matlock Bath. It’s now a small retail outlet for clothing, shoes etc (and yes there is a bit with Hornby, Oxford and Airfix for sale:thumbs:) but a few little things caught my eye that I guessed may be useful to others...

as it’s his place, here is a statue of the old fella.

but it was really these features that caught my eye..

A large sliding door (that despite the sign was in the open position)

another door only a few feet away.. quite substantial.

And this photo for the brick work INSIDE!!! (I have no idea if this was originally outside. - the photo of door one above is just through the doorway, and the second door is behind me.)

hope these small internal features are a useful reference to someone?

Sadly no. About rrp. And not a great selection. I normally look at the Oxford cars. Son looks at the airfix.

    Hello Andy
That looks like a very interesting building. I suspect that the Rusticated stonework on the return in your final photograph was once an external corner. Having been a Stonemason for the last 30+ years I have never come across this feature internally. If you look at the bottom two stones the chisel marks are clearly seen. The brickwork repair on stones four and five is also rather intriguing. Thanks for posting these photographs.

It’s quite possible, although I’m not sure how. I don’t think your quite at ground level, in fact approaching this doorway where the stones are, you come up a ramp (which would suggest two different build times on slightly different alignments, but this doorway is the same on each level (but the others have steps and “staff only” on the exits so I couldn’t investigate more on the other levels.
Well worth a visit, there is a loom museum still operating on one floor, although I’ve not yet had the chance to visit.

I was aware that a new retail model shop had recently opened in Matlock Bath, but didn't know exactly where, so this is presumably it. Somehow I couldn't see it being squeezed in amongst the amusement arcades, cafe's and chip shops (not so long ago there were 28 chip shops in Matlock Bath!) further towards Matlock itself. The place caters particularly for the hundreds of weekend motorcyclists who have traditionally congregated here for a good number of years, and up until the change of Derbyshire County Council from Labour to Conservative control, there were intentions of introducing a parking charge for motorcycles, causing concern among the local businesses who seem to thrive on the custom. After the change, the parking charge idea was kicked into touch, doubtless to the relief of local businesses.
The Peak District Mining Museum is also worth a visit, or was when I last visited.
    Keith.

No, the new one is back the other end of town towards the station. There is a small “archway” that led to one or two shops. He’s down there on the right.
