Over the weekend I have been knocking out a few more kits, or I should say, bashing them.

This first building (shed) is from the grain silo kit I built earlier, but there wasn't a need for it around the silos themselves, so I reduced its width to fit the narrow penninsula end and it will become the 'feed & seed farmers co-op'. I was somewhat disappointed with the decals that came with the kit as they just dissolved in the water, which caused them to brake up. So, at the moment, this warehouse (co-op) has no signage at all...

I had weathered this in a similar manner to that of my O gauge wagons, then after all the individual colours and washes were applied and dried, I gave the model a quick brush over of white acrylic paint. This gives the weather boards a nice worn and weathered finish.

The next kit I bashed is the same kit as what is shown in post #55, the produce store. This is the produce store that was narrowed down in width to fit Jay Dubyew...

As I had pieces left over from the previous kit build, I used these and a second kit I had stashed away to produce a completely different building. This building will be the cold stores. To make it different, I extended the length and also built a second storey upon it.

This pic shows the two different kits pieced together. The cream coloured panel is from the former kit.

This is it after a coat of paint and no windows or doors added.

Before gluing in the doors and windows, I gave the building another coat of paint and also picked out a few bricks in different colours. Then I used the chalk method for the mortar.

I still have to add the canopy over the loading dock and stairs and then add a few features to the roof, as well as paint.

Both buildings will require a new rear wall to finish them off and just like the mill, it will be knocked up from 3mm foam core.

    Cheers, Gary.

It was fantastic to catch up with class48nswfan (Dave) today. He flew 17,000 km to Australia to operate my North American layout !

It is always great to catch up with members of Platform 1 MRC (forum and facebook) to put a face to a name. We chatted for an hour or so before running trains. Then it was off to my local pub for lunch and a visit to Casula Hobbies for some shinnies. Great having you as my guest.

Thank you for dropping in Dave.

    Cheers, Gary.

    Started painting sleepers and rails...

I first gave the sleepers a quick splash of light grey to tone the black/brown Peco sleepers down.

Follow this I mixed up some raw sienna, burnt sienna and raw umber and gave random sleepers a splash.

At first it does look heavy, but eventually it does thin down like a wash when it dries.

I then applied a wash of white with the watered down raw umber and painted this over most of the sleepers after the previous paint application dried.

I gave this some time to dry before mixing 2 parts burnt sienna with 1 part raw sienna to paint the rails.

This is the results after the the rails had dried, but more work will be done to get the track just right.

Approximately 35' (12":1') of sleepers and 20' of rail have been brush painted. Not much more to go...

    Cheers, Gary.

I had a mate come down and stay on Saturday night so I never did get the rest of the rail painted up until last night. I will say that we had an enjoyable running session on the layout after I had cleaned the tops of the rail... Now I have another 20 odd feet of track to clean up ! :whatever:

What we did get up to was a little weathering on his (Dave Coyle) NSWGR C30T and 4 wheel coal hoppers. You can view the pics here : https://platform1mrc.com/p1mrc/inde...eek-a-nswgr-inglenook.2432/page-11#post-72372

Ordered a few kits from the US on the 07/11 and they duly arrived this morning (16/11). What I didn't know is that they were dropped at the door some time this morning and I didn't realise until my boys and I were steeping out for a while at 1:00pm...!

These kits should keep me busy for some time and I may get a couple together tomorrow.

    Cheers, Gary.

Not of late Daniel. I have been far too busy.... I will say I'm on leave at the moment and may be staying home for Christmas due to the bush fires. I may just get something done on the layout whilst off. Then again, I need to entertain my boys as I have them for the next ten days.

    Cheers, Gary.

Well, Daniel must have spurred me on a little...

Got stuck back into modelling today as I was up early. I was going to take my boys to the cinemas for the 9.30am session of Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker, but they decided to sleep in instead !

The two roads into the wood chip sidings had the sleepers spaced out to make it look a little cheap. I'll have to go back and repaint the rails again now as I have exposed bare metal the areas where the chairs sat. Still, I think the spaced out sleepers look good. I have considered doing this to all of the track but not as severe as these two sidings.

The mound between the wood chip mill and the bridge has been reduced in height somewhat as it looked way too out of place. The rise from the river up over the mound looks a lot more natural now.

Other areas have been planed down to give the impression of the track being built up. This is the beauty of laying track on the insulation foam, I can model below track level.

I have added another hill and cutting in the corner leading into the new yard. This helps break the scene between the oil depot and the grain sidings and grain elevator/silo.

The whole layout has had a fascia added to hide all the rough edges and it will give me something solid to model scenery to. It certainly has tidied the layout up a lot ! Where the buildings stand on the peninsula section, the fascia covers them from possible knocks. You could say it is insurance around the structures.

An overall view of the completed fascia with buildings in position.

Well, if we get to the movies tomorrow it will slow down productivity. Then again I haven't had a productive time on any layout for a very long time and it's about time I pulled my finger out !

If I do get a few hours in tomorrow and possibly Tuesday (if I don't head down the South Coast to see my family for Christmas due to bush fires), I'll start on the level crossings and adding a scenic layer of toilet paper and PVA as I had done on my small New South Wales inglenook layout Tomlins Creek.

    Cheers, Gary.

Gary, while it is nice to see modeling again with the facia making it look spiffo, your boys can't be real Star Wars fans if they wanted to sleep in :avatar:

PS. I thought the movie was good - I took my oldest 2 children to see the first one in 1977 & seen them all since...

    Hi Sol,
We still have time to see the movie, yet Jack keeps sleeping in... Oh, teen age boys, I was never like that ! :avatar::avatar:

It has been far too warm to work in the railway room on the layout, so I decided to scratch build the wood chip load/screen.

I purchased some balsa wood strips (3mm x 3mm) and some sheet (1mm x 75mm and 1.5mm x 75mm) some time ago for this project, but never got onto it. I found a few pics on the net that would suit what I exactly wanted and these pics gave me a hand at piecing the model together.

This pic here is the wood chip shed on the Allagash Railway, which I screen shot from a video on youtube.

This pic clearly shows how I am going to put the model together. Photo courtesy of The Train Master LLC model kits.

So, with these pics at hand I quickly drew up a sketch, calculated what timber I needed, then drew up another scale plan to lay the pre cut balsa onto to make constructing it far easier than using my eye.

In the above photo you can just see the roof truss angles through the wall frame I have knocked up.

Below are the two walls and the five roof trusses.

Now I have to connect the roof trusses together...

I thought this may cause some issues trying to stand each individual truss up at 90* and secure the roof joists to them, but by using the wall sections each side (taped down), I started with the end trusses (double A frame) and worked my way in, taping each truss vertical and in line with the wall frames. A spot of super glue on each truss ( one at a time) and it was easy peasy pulling these together.

Now the tricky bit..., securing the walls to the roof section !

Normally you would stand the walls up parallel to each other and then lower the roof on, securing in place with a spot of super glue. I decided to flip the roof over and balance on Lego blocks. A simple square was also knocked up from Lego to help support the wall sections.

After allowing the first side to bond, I turned it around and completed the other wall.

After allowing this to bond, I could turn it up the right way and let it free stand.

The only thing missing from the frame is some 45* bracing on each end of the openings to help keep everything square and to support the roof.

Well that's it for now and I'll be back after the frame has been painted and corrugated iron added.

    Cheers, Gary.

Nice work Gary. Got to say. I take a lot of inspiration from Mike Confalone as well, the Alagash is an awe inspiring layout.

Totally agree. My first design for this layout had a similar run round as in the video "Switching Andover ME on the Allagash".

Have you seen the "DVD" that Trainmasters TV did about a day on the White Mountain branch. Highly recommended.

No, I haven't seen this. I must/should sign up to TrainMaster TV, even if it's just for a month, so I can check out some of their videos.

    Cheers, Gary.
