Thanks both for the kind words. I'm going away with the family for a few days to deepest, darkest Mid Wales. Going to take a few projects to work on in the evenings as we'll be away from civilisation.

Meanwhile, two has become one....uh oh!

Really I want a 16tonner, but they keep evading me on eBay at the price I'm willing to pay.

They are holding a price of around £34 - £36 a shot on the bay a lot for what you get really and the Peco version is even more at £43+. Occasionally you may find a job lot for sale with a BIN price of about £150 for half a dozen but I've not seen anything like that this past year. One of the shocks in moving up to O scale from OO is realising the price shift nearly doubles, but then you get four times the volume in material and size. Try Rails of Sheffield asking them for discount, it works as I've picked up steel minerals for about £28 pounds a time paying over the phone.

Interesting info Paul. I see there wagons as being a fact finding mission at the moment. I used to do a lot of 1/48 scale modelling, tried moving up to 1/32 but didn't enjoy it any more hence taking my time and finding my feet with O gauge. As you say, the outlay is much more and I don't want to run before I can walk!

I suspect you will enjoy O Gauge and the secret is only buy in what you want or can deal with, on other forums such as GOG you will see the regular characters buying in kits to make on a rainy day ... called a "stash", this is an easy trap to fall into money wise and very often these kits never ever get made for various reasons. Often when they come up for sale they can be had reasonably priced but I'm always wary in case parts are missing or have been robbed out for another project... just a heads up so you don't fall into a trap.

I will concur with Paul here as I too am a "stasher" and have also been caught out with a "bargain" only to find out important parts missing or badly made. Luckily I am also able to scratch build much of the missing parts ( in the case of an Eric Underhill, Vulcan 03 shunter, a complete chassis!).
Knowing the skills you have already shown, I wouldn't worry about buying a "pup".

    Cheer's, Pete.

You will enjoy putting the brake rigging together on the O gauge mineral wagon.... :faint:

    Cheers, Gary.

You will have even more fun if you get a Slaters brake van...................

I'm having enough "fun" building my assorted 4mm brake vans to even contemplate more!

The undergear rigging on a Slaters brakevan is quite complex, the first one I did was a GW Toad and I got it horribly wrong since then I've learn how the bits on the brass etch go together and in what order so if you need to ask a question or two in the build process just shout up.

Thanks Paul, probably going to be a while before I start "O gauging" though!

Meanwhile, in Shark world, I'm at my least favourite part...

    IMG_20200119_183311.jpg

It's not perfectly square, I reckon the floor is slightly out, but from the outside you wouldn't know.

Next decision is whether to remove the lip (?) around the bottom of the end window opening. The van I'm basing it on doesn't have it, but I don't know if I want to risk damaging it by removing it.

I'll also need to slightly thin down the edges of the plough if I end up using them because they're really thick!

I'd say you could happily get away with filing that lip edge flat without causing structural weakness to the body.

I must say we have some great kit builders at P1MRC. With the work you do on these 4mm models and the work that York Paul, Andy, Pete (jakesdad13) and Rob Pulham does, is outstanding.

Keep up the great work.:thumbs::thumbs:

    Cheers, Gary.

Thanks for the kind words Gary! I need to get more efficient at painting now so I can keep up! :tophat:

I wouldn't worry about keeping up, you are turning out some stunning models and that is what counts. Fantastic work.

No need to keep up with us mate, both Pete and I build stuff as and when the time permits and Rob has relocated home so is in the process of setting up a new workbench, Andy has time slots where he can design too. Your stuff is spot on and hits the mark everytime, we are not in competition and often being too efficient spoils the fun because it makes you think you are dictated to by the clock. Keep up the great work at your own pace.:tophat::thumbs:

    Hi guys,

    Still making slow progress...

    IMG_20200126_090415.jpg

Note, I'm leaving the long, lower handrail off until I finish construction so I don't damage it. Also, I've rebuilt the bufferbeams from plastic strip. The buffers on the original seemed too far apart when compared with other stock and my attempts to remedy, just destroyed the brittle plastic. The replacements are also a bit too deep, but I got fed up messing them up when drilling holes for the new buffers!

As mentioned previously, there's a photo in "British Rail Brakevans and Ballast Ploughs" by Eric Gent of a Shark that's been converted into a standard BV, with the ploughs removed. I'm really tempted to use this as inspiration, despite it probably being a one off!

Quick upgrade: not a fan of the supplied plough wheels, far too thick for my liking so I've substituted them with some spare etched handwheels (Bill Bedford I think). Not quite the right style but much better in my opinion!
