I have designed this model for both HO and N scale to cater for those who have a modern layout. These superstores are everywhere in Australia and are always well patronised. The model is quite easy to build and the interior detail shows well when lit. I am running a class shortly and will be building this model. Modern buildings do lack the character of the older structures but they are here now and are not often modelled.

Hi Robyn and welcome to the forum, like the interior, looking to do similar on my retail units. How did you achieve this?
This is my attempt and trial:

That is a superb modern image building Robyn, I'm not familiar with Australian architecture and signage but the vernacular would certainly fit well here in the UK... probably not the large oval sign that big tho :avatar:. To me what makes this stand out so well is the attention to interior detail under illumination ... maybe some additional exterior down-lighters over the entrance and sign possibly but I'm not intending that as criticism. Nice work indeed and best of luck with your forthcoming workshop class.:tophat::tophat:

The problem with a lot of modern buildings is the amount of glass frontage they have and if the model is lit internally an empty shell looks horrible. The standard of photos these days is quite amazing and it is quite easy to use a photo of a fixture full of stock glued to a block of material to create the visual effect. It would be easy to overdo it so keep it simple is the best rule.

The sign looks bigger in the photo than it actually is due to the angle i have taken the shot. I am working on a method to light the awning sign but haven't got around to that yet.

Modern buildings are very easy to make and I have found them a great confidence booster for beginners as they go together quite quickly and always seem to look OK Some of these buildings are quite large.

Ah that old issue of perspectives playing tricks on us, yes looking closer I see you were looking down towards the model to take the picture and that sign therefore appears larger, anyway terrific modeling all the same because I get a strong feel for the character and charm of the scene.
