I ran a model building workshop today and we built my N scale kit of Woodley Walters Paints and varnishes factory. The guys were a little uncertain about having the ability to make these but they stuck with it and should be very proud of their efforts and after a few hours they went home with a great little model.
Very nice modelling Robyn, I agree, they deserve to be proud of their work!!! I am attending a hobbies/interests show in a couple of weeks and taking some of my models. I may invest in some simple kits for folk to have a go with, they would need to be an easy build as the show is only on for a couple of hours or so but you never know if I can get one person to join the hobby it will be worth it! Pete it sounds like a fantastic idea, getting people involved in some kind of modelling. Like you said even if you get one participant it’s worth while.
I totally agree with your comment about motivating others to get involved in the hobby, most of my workshops are about breaking the "fear factor" to having a go. I never complete a model during a workshop and this avoids people being intimidated by my work, I simply show them the steps to complete each stage and guide the participants as they complete the steps. It seems to work, the guys were quite negative when we started this morning and as the time progressed they started to see the finished item and everything changed. One of the models in the photo of 3 buildings is my original model and I used that to show the quality of what these guys have done and we have some very proud modellers. I wish you all the best with your little workshop, perhaps a 2" square of timber and some scenery materials to create a small cameo would be good.

Very impressed in your approach and style of teaching strategy Robyn, confidence building is key with novices ... small incremental steps as you know, as Pete says if he can get just one person fired up about model making it will be worth it. You bring a refreshing new take on modeling to this forum and that is wonderful so do please keep posting updates and developments of what you do as your work is inspirational to members here. cheers York Paul
These kits I am working on are more hand made as you need to cut out all the parts and then put them together. I have been creating a hand made model in HO and then use that to create the kit in HO and N scale. Some will include my screen printed windows or 3d printed parts. The kits are not downloads.
