    Thanks for PotW, much appreciated.

No work was done on the layout during the past weekend as I had been out and about. Looking forward to getting more done on the layout this week.

    Cheers, Gary.

That's it for this weekend. Hopefully get onto the next stage which is the corner and the fuel siding.

    Cheers, Gary.

Since I have been out of work and looking for a job, I have had some time to do a little modelling. The latest addition to the layout is the PRR flag stop station building that I scratch built a fortnight or so ago.

I had recently picked up a Walthers Interstate Fuel & Oil Depot kit to which I kit bashed to a two horizontal tank depot rather than the 3 x horizontal tank and 2 x vertical tank kit. I do have plans for the other few tanks...

Anyway, here are a few picks of the work...

    The kit in question..

The start of the kit bash. Many parts were painted during and before assembly...

Some of the fuel lines had to be cut and others joined in to obtain the shapes I needed...

The pump house in approximate position and one pair of feed lines placed into positioned.

The loading platform and pipes from pump house to tank and tank to loading platform. Weathering of the tanks was done before securing to their stands. This way I could weather the whole tanks, not just the visible sides.

Out in the sunshine after some weathering and addition of gravel to base plate...

Another out door pic of the opposite side...

A little touch up of paint here and there will transform the kit a little more as well as the addition of weeds and grasses.

I have also started on the back corner opposite the location of the oil/fuel depot. Trees had been foliaged up and positioned. In this corner I have added a layer of forest floor scatter. More vegetation will be added soon.

Here is a video I presented on our facebook page earlier this week of a mixed freight running through some completed scenery.

Ron made a mention on FB that I have some wagons that require weathering... I'll get to them soon, I promise ! ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

Thank you Gormo and Kim for the kind words.

This weekend should see the depot building and tanks in place, maybe some more scenicing around the layout too.

    Cheers, Gary.

Yesterday I got stuck into placing the depot building for the fuel/oil siding and the tanks I knocked up last week. I have also added the atmospheric vents on top of the tanks, something I missed but thanks to Pete (jakesdad13) they are now in place.

I have started on the scenery on the back part of the cutting diagonally opposite the fuel depot. I decided to do the grass in layers, as well as a good scattering of leaf litter. The leaf litter is a little hard to see, but I know it's there !

This is how the scene looked with leaf litter and a few trees thrown in for good measure.

The first layer of grass is yellow in colour followed by a mix of the yellow grass and burnt grass.

I followed this up with lighter green grasses closer to the railway cutting as it is much more exposed to the sun.

As usual, whilst the PVA was still wet, I went around and placed bushes and taller clumps of grass to lift the scenery, followed by planting a few trees back in.

I wasn't totally happy with the trees in this corner as it looked a tad sparse. On the other end of the layout I have conifers popping up here and there. These actually give the scene more variety.

Earlier this morning, I knocked up approximately 20 conifer tress in two distinct colours, after all, variety is the spice of life !

I gave these a few hours to cure then went back in and reconstructed the forest. It does look a lot better now !

Who would think that in that back corner which measures 35cm x 50cm with a sharp concave face has 22 trees on it ! Will it get more ?? Who knows...

Now, I better get back to making more conifers, I need to forest the mound besides the fuel depot...

    Cheers, Gary.

Forty four tree armatures bent and given a wash of acrylic colour so I can ad foliage in the morning. I'm sure I'll use most of these..., and then some !

The base plates will come off prior to adding foliage. They are there to hold them upright and allow the wash of paint to drain down, leaving paint in the trunk texture.

    Cheers, Gary.

Looking good Gary. Amazing you don't have RSI after all that bending

    Kind regards

    Thanks Geoff.

Today I only managed to add foliage to 24 of the 44 armatures I bent up and painted last night. Here is a pic of the production line...

I stopped making these so I could help my youngest son on his school assignment. This wasn't a bad thing as it allowed for the foliage & glue to cure on the armatures, which allowed me to do some planting tonight.

Prior to planting these pines, I spoke with an American modeller who gave me a tip about the under story of a pine forest. No tall grasses and weeds tend to grow in these parts as the pine needles make the soil acid ! He had told me that brambles grow under pines...

I decided to cover the area where they are to be planted with chopped dry foliage from the garden, to form a mulch/debris layer. This was done by applying PVA, sprinkling with mulch and then using a ballast mix of glue to secure it down. Using some 2nd hand green poly fibre, I created some mounds and added some fine foliage to them, making these mounds of poly fibre more akin to brambles. After this, holes were punch strategically on this piece of real estate and trees were planted.

The area is approximately 25cm x 10cm and I used all 24 x pines I made... I will need to make up the rest tomorrow as I require more !

This is what the scene looks like now, creating a nice scenic break where the track curves around to the grain silos.

I just can't believe that this little area chewed up 24 trees !

I just hope I don't run out of armatures or foliage for that matter...

    Cheers, Gary.

With my new job chewing up a lot of my time now (out of bed at 4.45am, getting home at 5.15pm), there is very little time for modelling. This weekend I'm hoping to carry on with some more scenery work.

Slowly and I mean slowly, I have only added a little more scenery to the layout. Considering scenery is what I like to do, I just wish I could take a couple of days off and play catch up. Then again, the layout isn't going anywhere...

So, this is all I have completed over the last 3 months....

Settled the oil distributor in place, still a little work to do between the tanks and the building.

Formed up bunding for the main tank from 3mm foam core that I scribed and painted. Once the main tank is painted and weathered, it will be sited and a thin layer of fine gravel will be added to bed it into position.

The raod that crosses the lines was straightened up. Previously it had a curve in it towards where the yellow ute is parked up. This had to happen as the bunding for the tank was too close to the original alignment of the road. Soil, grass and a few weeds were added between the road and railway tracks to help green up the scene.

The road was painted with acrylics to try and achieve that worn in weathered look.

A low down photo. This isn't the best photo as the image is slightly blurry...

In the above image is a new loco I purchased, well it's second hand but she is a great model and excellent runner. It's a U23B General Electric locomotive. These entered service in August 1966 and a few still exist today.

Here is a pic of the real deal in the very same livery : http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/pc/pc2823dsa.jpg

Managed to weather two hoppers as well. These two were bought about 3 years ago, had plastic wheel sets and wobbled all over the place. The new bogies/wheels are a remarkable improvement !

I have many more hoppers to do..., but tonight's task will be to bed the small flag stop station building in place and add scenery....

    Cheers, Gary.

Whilst adding scenery to the layout over the last few evenings, I didn't like the plaster formation off the road on one side of the level crossing.

I decided to scrape back the rough areas and add a smooth application of plaster to the area. After the plaster had set, with the hand of a little rubbing here and there whilst almost 100% cured, I ended up with an area that was fit for scenery.

I had glued done some coffee stirer sticks to level up the scratch built flag stop station building and I ran the plaster mix right up to these.

The edge of the road had to have the look that the local town folk pull over to the side of the road to drop of passengers. This area then had a sprinkle of soil and then applications of static grass applied in certain areas. The area between both the interchange line and mill siding was also grassed up.

The PVA has not cured in these following pics as the photos were taken 15 minutes after adding scenery. The road side gravel area will lighten up in colour when the area cures 100%.

    Cheers, Gary.

The next stage of scenery is well under way this morning.

I had to cut down the height of the MDF valance around the layout on the peninsula end as there would have been a scale 4' wall for vehicles to jump over ! I used a Stanley knife to cut this down to height as the MDF is only 3mm thick and easy to shave off.

Else where on the layout on the peninsula section were holes from the previous track plan I had originally laid that required filling up. I filled these holes with small pieces of tissue, pushed into the holes with the scalpel.

A light spread of plaster was cast over these holes whilst at the same time I smoothed the very end of the peninsula out.

Other areas of the layout I found the surface was way to rough, so I took my small plane and shaved the surface down, creating a flatter area, but still retained the fall towards the track.

All these areas were then painted with a wash of burnt sienna so that the plaster will not show through the layers of scenery which will be applied next...

    Cheers, Gary.

    G`day Gary,
My goodness that`s looking very nice indeed.......:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:
It just looks right.....and it just goes to show ,for those new to modelling, that " Yes " you can change things if you are not quite happy with them and plaster over or fill or rebuild where you had been before.
    Full marks Gary :tophat:
    Cheers Gormo

Thanks Gormo. This layout has had more face lifts than Cindy Jackson, the human Barbie, so why not make a few more changes along the way. Change is always good because if you're not happy with it and you don't change it, you'll kick yourself further down the track !

So today has been productive, well house hold duties to do and I added the grass to the above scenes from my previous post. The results here are not the final results. I still have a fair amount to add to the scene. So far the layout is looking a lot greener than it was 10 hours ago !

No more tonight as sleep calls for an early start tomorrow...

    Cheers, Gary.
