Many thanks Keith...did you see my post / request (last Friday) for info about the motors, gears, wheel sets etc that you used to build your Bulleid Leader ?

Still waiting for the kit to arrive from Chris at Golden Arrow Models..

    Regards

    Roly

Hi Roly, no I haven't seen that post, though 'in my defence 'yer 'onour' I've been busy decorating and have just caught up with the forum earlier. I built my 'Leader' a couple of years ago and documented it on the forum so it should be findable.......in fact I'll look it up myself as the old memory box isn't so great these days. Wheelsets came from Markits as a complete set but my experience of Markits tells me you'll need to be patient as he's not exactly a speedy sender of ordered parts, no different when supplying to trade customers either so I'm told! Motor-wise, I built each bogie as a motorised one, and they are a little tricky to assemble as there's not much space or clearance, so have to be pretty accurately assembled, but it makes for a fairly powerful loco doing it this way. I built mine for DCC and used 2 seperate decoders both set to the same numbers and settings but each bogie needs to be set to run in opposite directions as you need to remember that 'forwards' on one bogie will need to be 'reverse' on the other because they are opposing one another. Of course if you only intend using one motor then this doesn't apply. You will, if using DCC need to ensure the motor(s) are completely isolated from each bogie chassis otherwise it'll be the dreaded white smoke from the decoder(s). Presently I can't recall where I bought the motors from so I'll need to look that up, assembling motor to worm gears it's best to use a thin tissue paper (the now old-fashioned glossy Izal toilet roll tissue was reckoned to be the ideal medium for setting gear clearance........a better use than what it was originally designed for from my memory of using it!!!!) between the gear teeth as this gives the correct clearance apparently. I'll see if I can find my original write-up on the build and let you know, cheers for now, nice to know someone else shares my interest (or madness perhaps?)
    Keith.

Just found your request post Roly. I've been trying to recall where I got the motors from......not too sure on this as 2 years and quite a few models and kits have passed through my hands since then, but I think it may have been "Scale link" that supplied the motors, but if it was I'd get onto it smartly as the proprietor is apparently intending to close down due to retirement. Regarding Markits, I'd suggest phoning rather than an email, though you don't always get a reply by phoning either. His stuff is top quality but his "Customer Service" skills aren't in my experience! The wheelsets are a special complete kit, over £60 but quality, I think there is more information regarding other parts needed in the kit instructions, but can't find mine at present. Let me know how you get on, preferably with photo's as a forum post as I and probably a good few others will be interested in your experience with the build, and if you meet problems I'll do my level best to give what help I can.
    Keith.

Thanks for getting back to me Keith, and the additional advice. I’m certainly intending to motorise both bogies, and add DCC, maybe even sound.
With regard to the motors, I’m particularly interested in your choice as they clearly each drive two drive wheels, as the motors have 2 shafts/worms.
I think my failure to recognise the motor types from the last picture in your original post was that I expected them to be lying flat in the chassis, i.e. with the armature windings visible, rather than vertical. Once the kit arrives I’ll be able to measure the chassis, make a decision on the motor.
Don’t worry too much about hunting for the kit instructions, I’m sure I’ll get a set with the kit.

    Roly
